Stinkiest fish...would like your opinion!
« on: Jan 27, 2007, 12:37 PM »
Having just got the...odor...of the burbot out of the kitchen, I would like your opinion on what is the smelliest fish you have ever had in your kitchen?  That is, if your significant other lets you bring them through the door!!

I don't know about the kitchen, but in the boat it is definitely Muskie and Northern. Once their filleted or steaked though they are OK. :D

Not really a fish but I cooked some lobster inside the house once, and I heard about it for a very long time.

Suckers by far stink worse than pigs.

My freinds and me used to go dipnet them for smoking in the spring just after iceout. Once the smell gets on your hands, you will spend a week scrubbing before it starts to fade.

burbot, in the shack they get thrown out the door right away, hook and all. Clean them on the ice before taking them home.

Medson25, no, no...I know northern do have that distinct bottom of the lake slimey smell....but if you fillet them carefully and don't let the flesh touch the meat...and wash each fillet thoroughly, they are excellent dipped in crumbs and browned in just a smidgen of oil.  Delicious!

Left a shiner in the minnow bucket in the garage for about a week during the summer. That was pretty bad.

I'm with Littleoldlady...a pike out of cold water well prepared is almost impossible to tell from walleye or perch (taste wise anyway - the size may give things away).  That being said, I don't think I'm very interested in eating any during the summer any more.

I agree   but i had never tried one during the summer and maybe now i wont .  I always remember my mom complaining when i cooked salmon inside.  I have never caught one through the ice but i think carp stinks badly

Thriller, we are lucky...Cold Lake is well named...the water temperature doesn't rise that much in the summer because it is such a deep lake (down to 300 feet)...we have taken pike out in mid-summer, and they are as firm and clean-tasting as the ones we get through the ice.  Stinky on the outside, delicious on the inside.

You think that's something?  I was at college last winter, and had a big coffee can full of frozen smelt.  I took it out one day for bait, brought it back...and forgot to put it in the freezer.  It got kicked under my bed, and about a month later, I found it.  I opened it up and... The smell was gut wrenching.  Within 5 minutes, I could hear people at the opposite end of the hall yelling about the smell.  I don't think the smell went away for weeks...  ::)

Obviously you guys have never smelled Lutefisk cooking before. I remember going with my Dad to a fish store in Vancover when I was a kid and the lady reaching into the wooden barrel for fresh Lutefisk and taking it home to spend the whole time it was cooking outside because it would burn my eyes
