Fluorocarbon leader vs. Fluorocarbon line
« on: Jan 25, 2007, 05:30 PM »
I couldn't locate any flourocarbon leader material (25 lb. test) so I bought the same pound test flourocarbon line. Is there a significant difference between the two?

Thanks for your feedback.

I dont think there is a difference.  I use fluoro line as leader all the time.    Just have to read the fine print.  some line is just fluoro coated and not 100% fluoro.

Fluoro leader is usually alot stiffer.  I've also noticed it seems to be a little more abrasion resistince and has a higher knot strength.  In the realm of ice fishing fluoro line maybe the better choice as leader but I gave up on it for open water.

What are you guys fishing for (25 LB, 12 LB, 14LB)?  I use 8 LB flouro leader for walleye.  I also land a lot of pike with it and have had no trouble so far.  Also; is there a difference between regular Vanish and Seaguar Ice leaders? Or, is the Seaguar Ice just a marketing gimmick?

I agree 8# is good enough for walleye and is what I use while fishing walleye.  Lost pike with 8#and 10#.

I bought a spool of Vanish fluorocarbon leader material the other day.  It is much stiffer than the regular Vanish even though it's marked at being 100% fluorocarbon on both spools.

The Floro leader material is stiffer and usually more abrasion resistant.  The Floro line has less memory so it casts and stay on the real better.

I use 17lb vanish line for lakers, It's plenty strong, but it isn't too stiff. I use 8lb for perch and trout. I won't put it on a spinning rod again, it just falls off if it isn't on with exactly the right tension, leaders only for me.
