Portable fish finder
« on: Jan 16, 2007, 08:31 AM »
I WAS GIVEN A PORTABLE FISH FINDER FOR CHRISTMAS.   WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO SET THE TRANSDUCER IN THE ICE FISHING HOLE?  I HEAR SOME SAY IT SHOULD FLOAT ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER.   WILL IT WORK PROPERLY IF IT DANGLES IN THE HOLE AT THE PROPER ANGLE?  SHOULD I SUCTION IT TO A BOARD AND PLACE THE BORAD DOWN THE HOLE? WHAT'S BEST? CHEERS <<<>>>< ???

Your finder might be different but i have a small handheld one and the transducer has to be below the ice for it to work properly.
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

Termitten, had the same problem when we converted our portable to use for icefishing...because I would rather fish than do housework,
I cut the bottom off my mop handle, screwed the transduce to the cut bottom, taped the wire along the mop handle ,
and it is ready to put down the hole.  It is also easy to move from hole to hole.

I made a adjustable "T" style transducer holder.  It has a series of holes to raise or lower the transducer to stay right at the bottom of the ice level.  For really thick ice I have  a extension that screw on top.

I took some PVC tubing and 3 PVC T's and mate a nice + outta PVC with a piece that goes down into the Hole, cemented it all together, and then c-clamped the transucer to the piece that hangs into the hole.  and it cant fall through.

If you buy a Vexilar they supply it with a piece of solid "rod shaped" foam that floats --- te transducer wire goes down the center of the foam float ad you can pull the transducer deeper or shallower to set i just at the bottom of the ice.
You can accomplish the exact same thing with one of those "noodles" they sell in swimming pool stores.  Just use a razor blade to cut a slit halfway through a piece of noodle about 6 inches long, and slip your transducer wire into the slit.  Th transducer should point straight down.

I took an old wooden tip up and striped it of its parts. Placed the transducer at the bottom of it works great.

I did the exact same thing I have a portable model and took the suction cup off and just used electrical tape to mount the transducer to the  and I taped the trasnducer cable to the veritical post all the way to the top works very well.
