What's the best place to get weather information?
« on: Aug 26, 2003, 12:37 PM »
Weather is possibly the most important factor in catching fish. I was wondering if anyone has found a good site with reliable weather forecastes?
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.

if you find one you let us all know. that is the only job in the world where you can lie and get paid big money. I rely on the national weather service. check it out .

I would rather follow the moon phases before weather.  Last ice fishing season I had a calendar with the moon phases and the best times for catching fish.  I actually did do better on days that the calendar said so.  Coincidence or truth? You tell me.

If I can go, I go. I would put weather way down the list of important factors. Behind washing my hands after pumping gas on the way to the lake.

I think Mr.Seaguar summed it up pretty good. You gotta go when the oppurtunity exists. I've caught fish through the ice when sane people would have stayed home, but then ,when has anyone but another ice fisherman called us sane?  ;)

I agree - I hope someday to have enough time to fish that I can worry about picking moon phases or pre-frontal times.  Most of the time it's like "well, I've got 3 hours on saturday morning before I have to be at my in-laws, then I've got 1 1/2 hours on Sunday before I have to pick up my daughter."  Must be nice to have the luxury of worrying about "best weather times"  :)

Otherwise, intellicast.com is a good weather site!

The weather Channel has a good site.  I find they are not bad at 2 to 3 day forecasts.  The 10 day stuff I do not even bother with, nobody can do that.
I agree with everybody when they say if you got the time, you go.  But knowing wind direction and speed can be a consideration when you are considering a specific spot?  Esp for those who do not want to sit in a shanty unless they really have to. 8)

if you go to noaa.gov that is the web site for the national weather service. try it you'll like it. I agree with the weather channel. they are good for only a few days out from the date you check the ten day I could forecast that stuff.

I agree with himo National Weather Service is your best bet. If you can read there technical discussion you can find out thing they do not put in the genral forcast.

the national weather service is the one where ALL the others get their info from and then they change it around to make their forcasts look unique. what a job...

You know why you have to go to college to become a weatherman don't you?...It takes them four years to learn how to look into the camera and lie with a strait face.   By the way, I don't care for the Weather Channel,  I've found they are somewhat accurate, but they are rarely accurate with the temps.  If I'm near the computer I go to one of our local TV stations site and pull up the Doppler Radar.  It is only short term, but you have an idea if anything is headed your way.  As a matter of fact I'm watching a big line of thunderboomers passing over Syracuse right now heading right at us.   I do like the national weather service though for long term forcasts.
Fish may be stupid but I've never seen a perch sitting in a boat with a second degree sun burn trying to catch a man.

Thanks for the input guys! The local stations here in Wisconsin can never seem to agree on the forecast so it looks like I'll be using noaa. I've been watching their forecast for the past week and it was pretty close.

Hey Clam,
Batton down the hatches buddy, that line of storms came through here a little while ago (east of Roch)...there were tornado watches all around.

Now that's a forcast...The Weather That Was!...At Least it's accurate.

I use NOAA.gov-  This is where the weather channel gets there info from! It usally pretty accurate, for the most part, but weather can always be unpredictable. As for not following weather patterns, you can miss out some good fishing oppurtunities! Fishing before an approaching cold front or snow storm, can be flat out great fishing, the fish really get affected by incoming changes of barometric pressures, and weather.

Try weatherunderground.com    Just punch in your zip
code & BAM  , it will find the closed weather station in
your area.

I have always used the thin ice section on ice shanty. It has always been very accurate for my area in Colorado. I have also checked out yahoo weather but it is just not as reliable, and does not give you enough info. The weather you get from this site has a lot of info. I always like to know what the wind is gonna be like before I get out on the ice....... JMO
