Transporting Power Auger
« on: Nov 11, 2006, 09:13 PM »
How do you guys that don't have pickup trucks transport your augers? I've been folding down a seat and putting it inside out jeep, but we crack a window to keep the gasoline smell to a minimum. Im considering a roof basket, but it would be a pain in the butt taking it off the roof of my lifted jeep.

Any other suggestions?

Electric auger, light, and no smelly fumes. (I hope it cuts well)

I'd wrap the augers power head in a few trashbags the night before you go ice fishing, should help keep ther fumes in.

I've seen guys take an old gym type bag and slip it over the power head and zip it shut, works best if you have a zipper from each side.  Keeps the oil leak off of the floor also.

I may pick up one of those auger bags for $50 or so.

Zee, I have the Jeep for a poor man- the Geo Tracker. This is my first year of ice fishing on my own, and have yet to figure out how I am going to get ANYTHING in it. My backseats been unbolted and is hanging on my garage wall to give me more room, but still pretty tiny back there. I am picking up a Clam 5600 next weekend, and I think I can put that on the roof, but the rest of my stuff- ???

Atleast you get some good gas mileage, the Grand Cherokee gets 15MPG on the highway.

I usually take my wheeler. I load it either in the back end of my PU truck or on my trailer with the auger on the rack of the wheeler.I do have a cover that I put over the head of the auger.

I have used one of these on my Ford Explorer.
A good solution for under $100

One thing to note with these carriers.
If you don't have your load well balanced, the heavy side can sag.
To prevent this, I hook ratchet straps to the anchor points inside the cargo area of the SUV then hook the other end of the straps to each end of the hitch rack.  Then just shut the back end of the SUV on the straps.  Works perfectly to keep the hitch rack level.
Have YOU Clamped YET ?

Zee, yeah the MPGs are great, and I love the Geo Tracker to death. Most fun vehicle I have ever owned. I have the 2 door convertible, so summers are fun, and 4WD in the winter is awesome, that thing has such a small wheel base, it gets through alot.
