Woodstove vs. Propane Heater
« on: Nov 11, 2006, 09:04 AM »
I have been building a 6 x 11 shanty and have come to a problem, which would be better a woodstove or a propane heater. The shanty is collapsable so if I installed a woodstove I would have to take the pipe and stove out before I could collapse the shanty.

I'd use propane. Find the size of bottle you want and get it filled. You can control the heat much better with the propane as well. The woodstove requires much more work. Getting rid of the ashes and hauling wood along gets to be a hassle. Thats the biggest reason I switched  to propane.

If you go to propane make sure you have adequate ventilation.  I personally prefer the wood stove myself.

Wood stoves give off a nice dry heat .With propane we were always scraping condensation off of the windows...a bummer especially in hunting/shooting shacks .

GNT! How often, are you planning on moving the shack? Also, how does collapse?  ???

Fishkeeper,

When I designed my shanty I made it so it bolts together, the walls bolt onto the floor and the roof bolts onto the walls, that way it all fits in to the back of my truck and I don't have to haul it out to the lake on a trailer. All I have to do is drive out to the spot and assemble it at the lake with a ratchet and a 1/2" socket. It takes about 15mins to assemble. I could move it around the lake, but it will probably just sit in one spot all season.

Now, I understand, great idea, GNT!! Just my opinion, if it's a one time move for the season. Go with wood heat, it's a warm dry heat! The stove and the pipe, wouldn't take much longer!

I am leaning towards a woodstove. I can by a brand new woodstove for $80 and the pipe won't cost much. All I would have to do is have it so it is easily removed. Also if the temps go down to -35 propane doesn't work as well.

Wood......Glorious Wood....penetrating to the bone....dry and relaxing....propane is too wet in a fairly tight enclosure......I fish a ton in the winter, and maybe once or twice tops, have to empty some ash out of the woodstove....Grump

I fish out of a Clam 6800 portable. Mr Heater sunflower on a 20lb propane tank works perfect!! I would concider a wood stove in a permanant house.

Iam a proud owner of 2 permanent shanties.  One is 8*16 and bolts together like yours.  The other is 8*6 and stays together permanently.  I live on the lake where these houses are and wood is the anwser for me.  As for a stove and pipe it is well worth the time and money.  I make my own stoves but 80 bucks aint bad.  Although if you fish very much I would recomend insulating the floor with high density foam.  It eliminates that water puddle beneath you and holds the heat in when it does get to be 20 below or better :)

I had wood in my shack for the past 2 years, but replaced it with propane this year.  Not having to drag a pile of wood out with me every time or having to sit there and try get it started while my hands are frozen (got smarts and started using a bernz-o tourch to get it going) is going to be a nice change.  Plus, if you know you are coming back, you can keep it running at a low temp, so you aren't getting back into a 10 degree fish house.  They make an adapter called the "Steak Saver" that allows you to hook a 1# propane tank to the larger receptical hook ups.  It only last a short time, but nice to have with, just in case.  (also works on the grill when you run out 1/2 way through).

Hey Hardwater how about you post some pics of your heaters, and maybe give some cut sheets so some of use can use your heaters. ???
I need to go to the bathroom, but it might flip up if I go.

We have an 8x6 shack and  heat with wood. The cold and wind here in southern Alberta can get quite rank and we may use a good arm load of pine in 8hrs of fishing.
Keeps us good and warm and dries stuff out quick, great to cook on and keeps the coffee hot also.
We don't have a huge surplus of trees around here and fire wood is not in great supply but we won't have it any other way.
   SO I VOTE WOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me you didn't cut down the only tree between Brooks and the Hat. When heading that way I always stopped to admire this wonderful thing called tree. :callcops:

I know the feeling. I've even been debating with the idea of taking the belly boat out with the vex and a jiggin stik.

A picture of my scrounged/homemade wood burning stove . Some old cast iron stove parts bolted to a 30# propane tank. Sure heats up my 6 1/2 x 9 1/2.hardside shanty....will last all day on a small cardboard box of wood .
I have no problem lighting my stove....but then we have been using wood to heat our homes since I was born .

Here in Wisconsin, Fleet Farm sells them for $90
I know Menards sells them too, but not sure of their price.

nyone know where you can buy a small stove in Maine.  Need to outfit the shack with a woodstove instead of a propane stove.  The condensation on the windows is a huge pain in the butt.

Stanimal - from yesterday's Uncle Henry's:

box woodstove - $25 Portland  615-6107
Scandia 12 X 22 - $175  Richmond  737-2664
wood end heater - $75  Livermore Falls  897-3317

All would fit the bill for an ice shack.  Good luck.
