Yellow fluid in a walleye
«

Was cleaning a walleye tonight and noticed behind it's head some yellow fluid right behind it's head where I start my cut for the filet. It looks like duck sauce from a Chinese restraunt. Already seasoned. Lol. This was caught on Chatauqua. My buddy caught it. Now I see why he didn't want it. Lol. Has anyone ever seen this before? It was only on the one side. It's new to me???

You might have cut into the gallbladder.

Found out from my DEC friend that it's actually a tag. They use some kind of organic fluid for tags now. Supposedly came from the Oneida hatchery. It shows up with infrared light I guess. Maybe someone seen this on Oneida?

Yes, I soaked them and it came right out. Definitely grossed me out. Thought it had cancer or something. Lol

I cleaned more walleye than normal this year and had it happen on a few. Bile/fluid from pierced gallbladder. I just tried to keep it off the meat then rinsed the fillets as soon as I got them off. I also cleaned it off the cutting board. I’m guessing the gallbladder is either bigger or positioned a bit differently in a walleye vs other fish.

Nice.
The post above about gall bladder bile is seemingly accurate. At least Google says so.

I fillet a lot of walleye, see it all the time especially cutting in behind the gills to minimize meat loss. Rinse it off, nothing to worry about.
