Thanks much for sharing - always look forward to your posts.  Did catching any fish interrupt the movie?

Still mostly unsafe ice in lower SE Michigan, but the single digit lows will be here in a week or so.......

Stay safe / peace,

Niru_san: Glad to see you are getting out on the ice. It looks like you are able to be very comfortable. I notice in your pictures what you call "snail shelter". Are these home made, or are they purchased? We no longer have that type here.

Thank you :)
Snail type shelter is popular in one area in Japan, especially on a lake with only ice. Many people hand made that, but we can buy that from shop. The price is about $550.

>iceman260-san
Thank you :)
This time it was 36. The Japanese masters of smelt fishing catch more than 500 smelt every time. I can't reach that yet.

Hello, I most like is "Nanbanzuke" among smelt recipes.
The ingredients for the dish are vinegar, "Mentsuyu"(soy sauce within soup stock), "Mirin"(sweet Japanese seasoning) and water, and fried smelt, leek, celery and dry red chili pepper. My fishing friend who lives in Mich also became to like that dish.

What a great idea. I may have to copy you for when I take my Great Niece out, another thing to keep the kids entertained while out on the ice.
I watched a documentary on smelt fishing in Japan. Must admit at first I thought you all were nuts trying to catch what I would normally call bait. But the skill involved to feel the tiny bite, then I thought about it some more and really came around to the idea. Even looked up some of the Bitterling gear. So cool to see all the different ways we all find to fish, and find our fun out in nature.

this sounds like something i would like a lot im going to have to try that out, I did a quick google search for Nanbanzuke and that truly looks delicious, im curious if that is something you can make up before hitting the ice and fry fish to throw in as you catch them? thanks for the post! And good luck smeltin'!

Love the setup, very interesting.  I read that parts of Japan got almost 2 meters of snow.  Were you impacted?

That's good. Prepare the liquid and ingredients before frying the fish, and marinate the fish as soon as it is fried. It tastes even better if you refrigerate it overnight before serving. I hope you enjoy “Nanbanzuke”.

>WALL E GATOR-san
Thank you. :) I also think so interesting for children
I think American people think “Why do Japanese fish bait”. In Japan there is a culture that respects small changes. Smelt fishing is exactly that and a lot of Japanese crazy for that. It’s like Zen training.

I am lucky. In the Adirondack Mountains we have a lot of lakes with good smelt fishing.  People dip net them in the spring when they run up the streams and creeks.  You are right though, they make excellent bait. Especially when fishing for lake trout.

Thank you for comment. :)
The Japanese smelt is much smaller than the American smelt. The size is about 4". So hooks are small, about 6mm. We usually use about 5~7 hooks and it's about $3. I wrote a blog post about smelt hooks, but Japanese only. If you can use the Automatic Translation System, please see my blog. Comments in English are also welcome.

I will translate and read your blog later this evening.
We have been getting a lot of snow the past couple of days and I have to go out and start clearing again.

The shanty are either privately owned or rented. The one I go to has shanty for 4, 6, and 7 people, and the fee for a holiday is about $95 to $160.
