« on: Oct 12, 2006, 02:58 PM »
Well its finally snowing in batavia ny, first snow of the year and you guessed it I'm getting even more excited about the up coming hard water season.  I know its just a wet snow but you have to start somewhere and at this point I will take anything that gets me even an inch closer to the hard water ;D
All I need is ice and the fish will come.

Lewiston was north of the band.  Here's all of the NWS stuff as of 6:30 Friday morning -

Lake Effect Snow Warning

Expires 10:00 AM EDT on October 13, 2006

Statement as of 4:44 AM EDT on October 13, 2006

... Lake effect snow warning now in effect until 10 am EDT this
morning...

The lake effect snow warning is now in effect until 10 am EDT
this morning.

A band of heavy wet snow over northern Erie and Genesee counties
will continue to lift to the north this morning. Additional
accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are possible... bringing general
storm totals to 1 to 2 feet from Metro Buffalo to western Genesee
County. Total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected across
Niagara and Orleans counties.

The combination of heavy snow and widespread downed trees will
make travel extremely difficult across Metro Buffalo this morning.

Remember... in lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally
heavy snow in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away.
If you will be traveling across the region this morning... be
prepared for very difficult and slow driving conditions. Stay
tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other radio and TV stations for
further details or updates.

Special Weather Statement

Expires 11:30 AM EDT on October 13, 2006

Statement as of 3:29 AM EDT on October 13, 2006

... Historic record setting snowfall for the Niagara Frontier...

A major early season lake effect snow storm continued to hammer
the region around Buffalo New York through the wee hours of
Friday morning.

By 3am, the Buffalo Airport had received 14 inches of snow with
nearly 4 inches occurring in the past hour. Elsewhere, in the
Village of Depew, the snow had quickly piled up to 24 inches since
it began less than 12 hours ago. This is amazing considering the
waters of Lake Erie were a warm 62 degrees as the snowband formed
late Thursday.

Utility companies were reporting well over 1000,000 customers
without power. The widespread power outages were a result of a
combination of very heavy water laden snow accumulating on trees
that still have most of their leaves. Trees limbs break under the
weight of the snow and bring down power lines as well. Tree damage
across the area has been very significant.

The entire area the storm has affected is only about 25 miles
wide, extending from Orchard Park in central Erie
County... northward through the city of Buffalo to Niagara Falls.
Storm totals are expected to top out in the range of 18 to 30
inches particularly in the northern half of Erie County. Brisk
well aligned winds will extend the band as far inland as the
western suburbs of Rochester at times. At the same time, no snow
at all is expected across the traditional snowbelt area well
south of Buffalo.

The snowband will stay locked in across the area within a few
miles of the city of Buffalo through the morning rush hour then
gradually drift northward out of the area and weaken as the
morning progresses.

Driving bans exist in many communities. In addition, in areas
where power outages have occurred, do not walk around outside
unless absolutely necessary. You could contact downed power lines
and risk electrocution.

   Record Report

Statement as of 5:00 am EDT on October 13, 2006

... Snowiest days on record for the month of October...

The unprecedented lake effect snow storm that continued across the
Niagara Frontier through the wee morning hours produced some
impressive snowfall totals.

Records have been set on two consecutive days for snowfall at
Buffalo.

On Thursday, October 12, the Buffalo Airport recorded 8.3 inches of
snow, breaking the all time record for daily snowfall in October,
which was 6 inches last set on October 31, 1917.

Thursday's record did not last long however. Through 5am for Friday,
October 13, Buffalo recorded 10.9 inches of snow, setting a new mark
for the snowiest day in October since records began back in 1870.

The culprit for this record snow is the earliest lake effect snow
storm on record to hit the city of Buffalo.

29 degrees in the Mohawk valley and heavy frost on the ground. Heavy fog too with the Mohawk river being a lot warmer than the air.

I got about a 1/2 an inch last night here in York. Going to have to put rush on deer season this year. Looks like we might get ice by the end of November ??? Might be just wishful thinking on my behalf :D

What do you all think about the snow Buffalo got?  That should really lower the water temps in that area.

not sure it got much above 40 today in the jamestown area and supposed to dip into upper 20's tonight in cassadaga.... seems much colder than any day I ice fished all of last year    all the complaining about last years ice yet it was the first year i was on the ice before x-mas as a matter of fact i went x-mas eve and the weekend before ...  and i remember last year in the 70's into october    high hopes but it is looking good for a good year on the ice ... i will note that last year was my first time going through the ice also which i will not repeat but if i do i got my handed down mustang suit this year    a local fire department is retiring it and they see no better use for it than to give it to the guy they may have to don theirs for ...
