BOWTIFUL DAY!
« on: Mar 03, 2020, 11:07 AM »
Figured I’d sneak out and take advantage of this gorgeous weather. I started out in 6 FOW hanging Smelt while I drilled another 40 holes to egg. Got them all egged and started getting robbed in the holes that were in 18” of water so I dumped the Smelt I was hanging and went inshore and dropped my free range, cage free Salmon eggs down. Egg bite was hot today finally but so sporadic I couldn’t get a pattern on a core area all rogue cleanings just nomadic roaming today. I was able to stick one nice Hen in 18” of water

Sweet... I'm jealous.. spent my morning   cutting vision windows in some new doors for the labs.. I've found this whole season to be with out a sensible pattern.. I thought it was just me.

Nice bow!
I wish I could have gotten on some ice locally today to take advantage of this gorgeous weather but I have to work tonight so no traveling north.

Instead, after doing my civic duty, I made a speed hike to check a snake den for activity.
Still slow this early in the day but a couple garters are out.
It's that transitional time of year between seasons.

Because they’re cool as the other side of the pillow! I get that people hate snakes, but I personally find them to be fascinating. Especially some of the less common ones. I am one of the freaks who actually us gone looking for rattle snakes.

Awesome bow. Those eggs sound expensive, about how many jars do you go through in a day?  ;D

I'd rather face a guy shot grizzly with only a pocket knife than get within 100 feet of a garter snake while I'm holding  an AK.

Sorry about the snakes to you guys who don't like them. I just thought it was cool that at this transition of the seasons you could be ice fishing or finding reptiles on the same day.

Back on topic, AA, would you care to share your egg rig?
I target bows most often when I ice fish but never use eggs. Nightcrawlers are my go-too but can be a PIA to find in winter or early Spring.

Pretty simple, just a #8 octopus hook with 6 foot of 6# leader double uni knot to 10# braid

Pretty much what I already use except I use a #6 bait holder for nightcrawlers.

Do you get robbed alot? Hit and spits?
Do you get many gut hooked?

My favorite thing about nightcrawlers is they seldom get robbed or hit and spit, which makes a huge difference when using tip ups spread far apart.
The thing I hate about crawlers is the percentage of gut hooked fish.

No never robbed and always in the roof or corner of mouth with hook with the eggs that are attached to my slammer, when I say robbed it’s holes I’ve egged as a locator device with nothing attached.

No prob! For what it’s worth, live Smelt or shiners will catch your biggest trout then eggs then crawlers and then powerbait. Always exceptions but that’ll be your avg how it works everytime

And when I do run Smelt and shiners I use baits that are outlandish. Pin baits will typically get you small fish. If you want numbers great if you want quality I’m telling you this is true. I had to go to eggs bc that’s what was on there mind today, it is what it is.
