Sled runner kits
« on: Nov 30, 2019, 07:54 PM »
I just purchased a clam 2 man flip over and was wondering if I can use any brand runner kit I want or if I need to stick with the clam brand only?

On one of my clams, I went to a plastics shop and bought strips of UJMW plastic and they are awesome.

On my Glidelite, I just put Otters Hyfax on to protect the bottom, length is more important than anything, as long as they cover end to end

like said find a plastics shop in your area.  the one down the road from me always has scrap strips from ripping sheets.  its the black and green good stuff uhmw or whatever they say.  I seen a guy had truck bed liner on his last year.

X2...I used this company a few years ago. You can get the UHMW in almost any length, shape and size.

Here is a comparison of HDPE (Hyfax) vs. UHMW:

BF86 - Check the length of the tub with a tape measure from front to back, the hyfax when you look to order should tell you how long it is, order accordingly

I bought a sheet from Grainger UMHW and cut it myself on table saw. Did my Otter and Frabill with SS bolts. Kind of pricey though. 10 or so years ago.

But that stuff wears like iron...as you have experienced. Much more resilient than the Hyfax (HDPE). You get what you pay for. I have a slab of it for a cutting board. Hardly a score mark in it.

1/4 in thick by 2 or 3 in wide. You will only do it once in your lifetime. UHMW is way better and slipperier than the std runners.

At a 1/4” thick that doesn’t leave much meat to counter sink bolt heads ? Or am I missing something?

I would say min. 1/2". Like you said...countersink allowance. Not to mention the wear, which might be minimal, but still.

I counter bored for flathead screws and it was no problem. Also, it just won’t wear.

What kind of hardware are you guys using to attach the runners to the sled? Flat head bolts with nylon lock nuts?

Do I even need runners? My Clam one man is gonna ride in my truck bed, and I'm at most pulling it by hand less than a mile.

I pull mine by hand less than a mile, but part of that is on concrete and or gravel. Surprising how much that will scratch and gouge the bottom of a sled. Easier to replace runners if ever needed than patch a hole.

I did it differently. I put these "pronged T nuts" on the inside of the sled with the prongs towards the exterior and the smooth face in. The holes are drilled to the size of the shaft of the T nut. The screws are coming in through the runner.

It was smooth and simple. No washers and nuts or bolts sticking through the inside of the sled.

I put Lock-Tite on all the threads and had no issues at all.

Much cleaner approach in my opinion.

You can get by without but protect your investment. The corners of the sled will need protection when lifting/pivoting into truck bed. Corners can be the thinnest spot. Raising the sled a little, with runners, will mean less friction and that alone will help. Pulling a mile (or less) on snow is a long way. Seems longer dragging a load.

Did you use locking nuts, or standard nuts with loctite? I would think nylon locking nuts would be too tall to countersink.
