Sled Pulling Harness
« on: Feb 12, 2019, 07:50 PM »
Any good ideas for a pulling harness? My son and I just about killed ourselves dragging our sleds/shelters through the new snow last weekend. We both have ropes long enough to go diagonally across our chests, but for long hauls, there must be something better out there. Something with a little padding like backpack straps but with a chest strap too.

I guess I'll go first;
1) Smitty Sled
2) Clam pulling harness http://stores.clamoutdoors.com/clam/sled-pulling-harness.html

I've heard of people using a deer drag harness. But a Smitty sled makes pulling sleds in snow alot easier. You should look into building one or you can even buy a kit through Smitty. He is on iceshanty.

Amazon has CrossFit sled pulling harnesses for half the price of the clam. Haven't tried it but it looks like it would work to me.

I use a tree stand harness worn upside down. Arms thru the leg holes, wearing it like a vest, under my coat. I put a carabiner on the end loop to hook to sled rope. Works like the clam harness, but I have 3 laying around already.
If you ever get hit with a bucket of fish, be sure to close your eyes. ;)

I put some Armor-all on a rag and wipe it on the sled every other trip or so, makes pulling so much easier. I also replaced the pull rope with a 18 or 20ft one, that definitely helped. I have a smitty but hate that I have to load and unload the flipover everytime. I bought a flipover to be mobile and run and gun, the smitty slows me down but for deeper snow it definitely helps and comes along. Haven't used a harness yet but have thought about adding something to spread the pressure.

I use a backpack with the chest straps.......... I put a small carabiner on the end of my pull rope and then attach the carabiner to the carry handle of the backpack. All it cost me was $1.00 for the carabiner. Works well and I put extra gloves and hats in the backpack. Cheap and effective.

I had used the deer drag... it works well.  I would rather use my day pack with belt.  I put some of the heavier food items and beer in the pack to lighten the sled.  Binder to the bottom grab loop.   And it's on a smitty

I cut the leg loops out of a tree stand harness that came with my stand for quick removal if I fall through. The harness Has two loops in the rear belt area that I clip caribiners tied into ropes. The ropes have caribiners on the other end that clip into the sled hitch pins

Deer drag/harness is the way to go. I've got an old style tree stand harness that doesn't have leg loops. It has a bottom attachment point designed for dragging. With a long pull rope, it's great. The waist level attach point really lets you pull. I'm thinking most of us also hunt and already have a few harnesses around.

My friend uses a deer tree stand harness while I use a Clam harness. The harness also frees up my arms to use trekking poles.
I sometimes wear snowshoes and found trekking poles help. Now I use trekking poles ALL the time even without snowshoes.
The trekking poles really give me extra balance especially on glare ice when wearing YakTracs. The trekking poles come with a tungsten tip that
would also act as ice pics in an emergency.

used to use a cross country ski sled. the sled was linked to a harness belt with long thin fiberglass poles. was nice when heading down hill to the lake as the sled stayed behind you

Smitty sled for sure, then a harness or a simple pool noodle for some padding on your rope.

I use the Clam Harness with the two tow ropes through 8' long X 3/4" dia PVC poles to keep the sled from running me over going downhill.  Works well.

Another cheap option is to take the harness off your golf club bag and use that until it's time to hit the greens again.

Find a young relative or neighbor person, get them hooked on ice fishing. Let them pull your gear. No need for a harness! Got a good buddy for fishing!
Important tip. Y’all have to time it right, too early they can’t pull the load. Too late you only get a few years out of them before they are too old to pull the load! :)
Keep it safe! JDL
