Sauger
« on: Jan 07, 2019, 01:00 PM »
I'm on a kick recently of wanting to catch more species native to Montana. Don't get me wrong, I love most of the invasives, but have always thought of sauger as a unique and under-appreciated fish that I'd love to put my hands on. I've never caught one and would love to do it through the ice, but I'm definitely am not opposed to open-water fishing either, given that they tend to be more of a river-dwelling fish. Anybody have any suggestions for a good body of water to target them in?

I'm liking that idea! My grandpa lives in Worland. Might have to pay him a visit and get on the ice

PablitoPescador- Bighorn lake for sure in the Winter but if you have relatives in Worland about end of March to early april the saugers move up the river towards Worland and we have caught up to 25-30 sauger in a day just north of town.. There are a tons of saugers to be caught you just need to find a place that is very slow in the river and run some mr twisters across the bottom about as slow as you can real and you'll catch some- Again that's in the spring of the year..

We have been catching a bunch of them in Bighorn Lake, you can check it out in the Wyoming Fishing reports..

Good Luck...….

Can’t thank you enough for the info, elkhnter! Sounds like an amazing fishery. I might head out there this weekend. Are you guys getting them on tip ups with live minnows mostly?
