From what we could tell it was an air pocket. I tried to light it and there was no smell so we are ruling out methane. I’m sure in some way it’s probably related to the earthquake or wave action as the ice was forming. It bubbled real hard at first but then continuously burped for the next hour and a half while we were there. If you walked around it the bubbles would start up again more rapidly. We have 12 inches of ice so we never really felt in danger. And no we didn’t catch any fish out of it as cool as that would be.
