Tie direct to lure or....
« on: Nov 25, 2018, 11:25 AM »
I have always tied directly to the lure. What's people's opinions on these?
Do you think this will scare away the fish?
I'm looking for a quicker way to change out lures.

Don't like Duo-Locks, had 'em open up plus they are weed catchers. Tried these open water this past year and haven't found anything to dislike yet: SPRO Split Snap

The size #1/10# test are very small with the size numbers incrementally increasing in physical size. The size #3/45# test is just right for #7 Jigging Rap or equivalent sized spoon.

They don't come with a swivel but I prefer mine up the line anyway or you can easily add your own. My vote goes to their (SPRO) power swivels.

Sometimes I do still tie direct, especially if the jig is extremely tiny.

To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

How far up are you tying the swivel?

Depending on what I'm targeting, how clear the water is and if the bite is hot or not the swivel might be 12 - 14" or as much as 3 feet from the business end of the leader. Aggressive bites and stained water mean more latitude for less than perfect presentations. Clear water and finicky bites mean everything has to be just right. The lightest line with least hardware generally does better though I have seen exceptions.

I'm wondering what lure the OP had in mind or if it was just a general question.

Direct tie...no split shot...no swivel...no floats. Tip-ups?...a little more hardware.

Spoons and minnow style baits I use the size 12 vmc rolling swivel followed by 2’ of fluorocarbon and a size 00 vmc crankbait snap. Both are tiny and the snap makes changing up easier in the cold.

I run straight fluoro on an in-line reel and tie direct for jigs to avoid line twist.

I like how everyone has a little different setup.  No one size fits all.  Think it comes down to more of what you are confident in fishing.

I tie  a size 0 swivel in then run 30" of fluorocarbon leaders below the swivel. That way your main line doesn't get chewed up.

interesting how  everyone  sets  up and the reasons they do .... my main target is blue gills and  crappies  and I tie  directly to the line  i don't  even use  a reel  just a  1 1/2" spool.....now  perch  fish i  jump up to a  shorter  rod  and a reel   because  generally i'm in deeper water ...walleyes  love catching them  but rather eat perch  .....  still no swivel  .... that's not saying my set up is  better  because it's probably not  i'm just to lazy and cheap to change

Love using these...perfect for changing jigs. Problem is, the eye of the 3mm jigs I use are just too small. But they are excellent for horizontals...gives the same action as a loop tied in the line.

I've always used no-knots, makes changing out jigs really simple...and never once have I had one open up and lose a lure. I did buy micro barrel swivels this year (ones used for steelhead fishing), to try to cut down on line twist on the spinning reels.

I am also a fan of the fly fishing and speed snap. They are super small and have not had a noticeable impact on the fish. The time saved and frustration avoided from re-tying all the time has me sold on these.

Ok , sorry Bob the doubl uni instruction was given during a 30 mph boat ride lol ,, so I guess you’ll have to use a barrel swivel, until ice classes resume 🤪

I second the use of Snaps for panfish. I have seen them in 3 different sizes. I also use a pair of forceps to hold the damn things.
