Does Ice Shanty keep up to date with the Island Derby on Champlain this weekend or do I have to use that Facebook site? I have never participated in that derby and I am wondering the best way to stay up to date with the leader board.

Maybe I will win the auger, that is if thats not rigged too. I have always assumed some of these tournaments are like that. I will chalk it up as a wasted $25 and keep on fishin'. Tight lines guys! hope to get some meat in the freezer tomorrow.

That's how I feel about the LCI now too. More people are getting caught cheating every year.

I think that goes for just about all the ice fishing tournaments in vt. Whenever there is money up for grabs there going to be a-holes that have to break the rules. Really too bad it has turned a lot of people off from our local derbies.  Same handful of people seem to have the same “luck” every year. The ol saying goes if you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying

I am not a tournament fisherman but know a few of the guys who seem to be in the running every year. I have to say right here that the ones I know are the real deal and are out on the ice or open water all the time and are constantly scouting and put a lot of work into their fishing. Anyone can win since luck certainly has a lot to do with it but the skill aspect helps to improve odds. Ever wonder how top bass pros like KVD always seem to win more than most anyone. Skill, planning and great equipment along with some luck all add up to final results.

Yea but kvd does it for a living. Your "BUDS" don't. I'm not saying they dont know how to fish or that they are even cheaters. The bottom line is the state has alot of poor people and people who neeed a fix.  Fishing is cheap and a week spent prefishing for winners to make 500$ is worth it to some.  Remember derby winners are never giant state records they are simply just above average fish. Doesn't take much...

If you don't like derbies because you fear people are cheating than don't enter them.  Seems like a pretty simple solution to me.  The people who organize them put a lot of time and effort into putting them together to offer people a fun and possibly rewarding experience.   Just save your $25 and quit your b***hing.

My sentiments exactly. I spent the weekend pan fishing on keelers and saw all the families out there in the tournament. I would say most of the people were out there just having fun with a hope that they would be lucky. The entry fee is pretty cheap entertainment IMO. In the past I have run a popular kids ice derby in North Hero and can attest to the fact that it is a lot of work to put one on. Hats off to the people who step up to provide all that entertainment for so many people.

Yes, 10.32lbs, caught in Keeler's Bay while pike fishing!  Awesome fish.  There were several derby records set this weekend, and a state record pike/pickerel hybrid was also caught.  Lots of huge fish on the board.

I have 500ft spools on my tipups and keep them FILLED. I've only been nearly spooled 3 times, and they were all while pike fishing on Keelers. No doubt salmon hits. I was on the tipup immediately after the flag popped, so it wasn't for lack of attention. Got to the tipup to find line just RIPPING off the spool. Never got to make an attempt at a hook set on any of them, because they all dropped the bait.
