Another illegal stocking..
« on: Feb 28, 2006, 09:15 AM »
From this months IFW ffishing report...: >:(

Region D - Western Mountains

In last week's report from Region B, Regional Biologist Bob Van-Riper
confirmed the presence of northern pike in Mosher Pond. Mosher Pond is a
small headwater to Little Norridgewock Stream and a tributary to Wilson
Stream and the Sandy River. The Department's Chesterville Bog Wildlife
Management Area is located just downstream of Mosher Pond. From Mosher,
northern pike have direct access to Norcross Pond, located immediately
downstream. They'll then be able to move upstream in Little Norridgewock
Stream to North Pond in Chesterville and Parker Pond in Jay. From Little
Norridgewock and Wilson Streams pike can move to Locke Pond and Sand Pond in
Chesterville, or to Crowell Pond and Fellows Pond via the Sandy River and
McGurdy Stream. Most of these ponds support popular, high-quality sport
fisheries for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, and white perch, and all
support a diverse assemblage of native minnows and sunfish. From the Sandy
River, pike will of course have access to the entire Kennebec River below
Madison, encompassing several tailwater reaches supporting outstanding
fisheries for brown trout and rainbow trout (e.g. Abenaki, Weston, and
Shawmut tailwaters).

Specific, long-term consequences of the illegal stocking of pike in tiny
Mosher Pond are not easily predicted, but we can be certain of two things:
if pike become abundant, impacts to native fish species and long-established
non-native sport fish will be dramatic over a very large geographic area,
and the Department's options for eliminating pike or effectively containing
them are exceedingly limited. I have to wonder if the selfish individual(s)
who perpetuated this crime considered this before dumping the bucket.
Illegal stockings are among the foulest of fish and game violations, and the
ecological consequences of this practice warrants the attention of all
conservation-minded people in the sporting and non-sporting community.

-Dave Boucher, Assistant Regional Fisheries Biologist

wow this is what we all have been dreading    we love fishing for the pike WHERE THEY ARE and those not willing to travel for them should be shot!!! to lazy and stupid to realize the impact that this will make   the problem as backwater will tell you is that mdif is going to take extreme measures to eradicate this illegally stocked fish in the headwaters of some great trout fishing and it will take years to rebuild it

These guys are not very sportsman like... >:(  Half the fun of a fishing trip is picking the place and traveling to it, I live in a town that has one pond Upper and Lower Hinkley, which only has small brookies 8-12", sunfish, and small bass, and I have spent a lot on gas money to go enjoy the fishing and scenery of other ponds in the area, sometimes traveling up to 2 hours to get somewhere because I want to take advantage of that specific fishery and what it has to offer.  There are a lot of these selfish people out there, who ruin good things for the rest of us.  I knew I wore my stupid people shirt today for a reason.... ;)

Shirt says: "God must love stupid people, He made so many of you."

I guess I'm not.  I've only caught them that big, so far,  I hate dealing with all the dogs.  I like dogs, but as an owner you need a little more control sometimes.  I've had them try to get my lures and tripping over my tipups. >:(

Shutting down pike fishing is the same as protecting them. That won't stop the bucket brigade either.
Its a shame that there are those that want to remake the freshwater fishing scene in Maine by stocking pike all over.In a few ponds that don't support any other viable fishery thats not so bad,but releasing them into good fishing waters is just not right.
Make sure your brain is running before you put your mouth in gear.

Plus in order to shut down the fishing you would have to close off the lake to any fishing, because as most of us know, Pike will take a lot of bait you would use for other fish, so you would still have your incidental catches.  We don't need to start closing lakes, just stop protecting those who cross the line into illegal actions,  like was previously stated, if you know of anyone participating in these bucket transfers or you see someone, let someone you know that you are comfortable with know and more than likely they will do something about it, so that you don't have to be involved more than passing some information.... ;)

There isn't much the state could do to reclaim these heavily populated waters, short of wiping out the entire fishery in the lake with some sort of chemical, waiting the desired die off period, and restocking.  The most important thing is to stop the transfers until the IFW can catch up and come up with a better management plan for the enitre state.

We as fisherman all know that illegal stocking will be and has been the ruin of a good coldwater fisheries.
But it all boils down to us, the fisherman.  We as a group have the power to petition IFW with our concerns.  Without fisherman/fisherwoman, hunters and trappers our Maine waters and woods would be a disaster.  We are the ones that fund conservation of our woods and waters, and it seems that it is time for us to take a stand on the things that we hold dear.
I have fished  and hunted for over 50 years with great memories.  I want the future generations to enjoy what I and many others have experienced in the great outdoors of Maine.
Stick together guys and gals, we CAN change this.
Thanks for listening, just MHO....

I think the fines need to be upped, and significant rewards should be offered for info leading to a conviction. Someone may not rat out their neighbor, but 15-20k changes that sentiment alot (be nice to see someone like LLB or KTP step up and donate some reward funds!).

All its going to take is one or two convictions, and this will slow down.

10k is small potatoes compared the the damage they are doing.

We need to have an environmental terrorism bill for some college students spraypaining a sign, yet the REAL environmental "terrorists" (their term, not mine) who are doing irrepairable damage are staring at a 10k fine?

I think the key is a huge reward for info. leading to an arrest. There's people out there who know who's doing it; just gotta make it worth their while.

Track down Bill Pierce's email, he is their PR guy.

Send it directly to him.

Truly, this is how things get started. Sometimes all it takes is one good idea and a little legwork.

An independent reward program that could lead to an arrest and conviction for illegal stocking just might be the ticket.

In the oil pollution field, there is such a thing as a "natural resource damage assessment" that is done to calculate the damage done.  Each fish, etc. is assigned a dollar value (pretty high at that) and the total damage is calculated and the huge penalty passed onto the polluter.  IF&W is involved in this process.  Maybe it could be applied to illegal introductions?  Anyone caught would get one HEFTY bill.

I can tell you what nothing is going to be done no matter how much people B!^ch.  Look at the Indian Gill Netting in Washington people have done protests and nothing has ever come about it.  Wardens seem to never be there when wrong doing is happening but when you are doing something right they are there to find something bad.  Like fishing 2 minutes after sundown ect.........  If you can think your voice of opion will really work then keep on saying stuff.  You have to remember that this is part of the government and it is all politics.  Sometimes things may not as they seem also.  You got to remember birds are a good part of illegal stocking also they land in the water and get eggs on them some of those eggs survive to hatch in other bodies of water also it is not always humans.......  Do you guys now want to shoot all the birds also........  Atleast that will terminate the chances of the bird flu.
