Tackle storage
« on: Nov 14, 2017, 10:54 PM »
What do you guys use for storage?  I'm trying to not take a bunch of 3600 & 3700 size tackle trays out on the ice, I have a small double sided box for all my jigs, but what to store my minnow profile baits and spoons in?  Thanks?

One of these will hold 46 spoons and also works with minnow type lures like jigging raps.

-I just have a jig box that has two magnetic strips in it. Hold all my jigs plus a couple buckshots that I use on the regular. https://sportsmensdirect.com/shop/ice-tackle-storage/sdi-Waterproof-thin-ice-mag-1-jig-box/

-Terminal tackle along with larger lures (blades, jiggin raps, spoons, etc.) goes into a 3700 box.

-Quick strike rigs and the like go on those "Rigger" roller things, I've seen a lot of guys use cut up pool noodles as well.

-Everything fits nicely in a soft sided tackle bag I use on the kayak. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017P3B0H6/ref=asc_df_B017P3B0H65266439/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B017P3B0H6&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198095337570&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5695949773464090110&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9016994&hvtargid=pla-350038241200

That clam foam box above for spoons is awesome looking though.

It looks like those Clam ones were made for them by Plano. Just used different color latches and added the Clam logo. They have a couple of sizes.

Pretty tough to get away from totin' boxes of stuff. I've kept all mine to the 3600 series. Used to jam them in a small tackle bag that had pockets for other stuff. Handy enough for the most part. Check this link to another storage discussion with some pics of DIY solutions: http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=262353.0.

I'll agree that Clam box is cool for spoons but not necessarily "new". I've used a similar DIY solution for over four years. If you save the foam from electronic equipment packing (the durable closed cell stuff, not styrofoam) you can build your own in < 20 minutes.

Get the deep Plano 3630 ($5.46 @ Tackle Warehouse right now), cut the foam to fit and make slits with a fillet knife tip. Done.

Love the Rose Creek spoon boxes, much smaller and work great.

I tried the foam filled spoon boxes from Clam but it sucks not seeing what you're looking for. The Striker Ice Transporter bag has pretty much solved every gear storage problem (including tackle) that a guy could have for an average outing. I use shallow 3700 boxes, one for spoons and one for Jigging Raps/Puppet Minnows/assorted hard baits. The key is getting the shallow ones.

In the bag I keep the following which covers everything I need for the most part.

-5 Rods
-2 x shallow 3700 boxes
-Cabelas large jig box
-Soft plastics binder
-Bait pucks
-Extra propane bottle (full one on the heater)
-Extra auger battery and charger (new 40v lithium SM)
-A bunch of Northland impulse containers
-Ice picks
-Cleats
-Gloves
-First aid kit
-Dipper
-Forceps/Pliers
-Extra auger blades and a 1/4' ratchet & socket in case I'm a long way from home

There's plenty of room left for other small items and it doesn't weigh anymore than it would if you hauled all that stuff separately. Can't recommend it enough for tackle and gear storage all around.

I see a lot of spoons with single hooks on them, do you swap out the trebles for single hooks or do they come like that?

I have a small assortment of beaded spoons, there was a discussion about them a while back.  I got my slab grabbers at McGathys Hooks.

Yea I swap them out with singles, less damage to fish and I do all C&R.
