Bait up Container / Genie Jar
« on: Nov 12, 2017, 08:03 PM »
Anyone use a Bait Up jar for minnows while ice fishing?

I had one in my hand at Scheel's yesterday but put it back because I didn't think the minnows would stay very long in such a small container.  Apparently changing the water frequently is the trick.  Would be nice for packing light for early and late ice.  Curious if anyone has experience with these small minnow containers.

Rule of 32 ...........water freezes.
Rule of 0  ............water really freezes and it is just plain cold out...bait freezes in 30 seconds.

I picked one up on sale from fish USA. I figured if it doesn’t work I’ve spent $7 on stupider gimmicks. Hopefully I’ll know more in a month!

These aren't meant to replace your minnow bucket. What they do allow is to hole hop or set tip ups without lugging around the larger insulated minnow bucket. This allows multiple people to be in different spots without having to chase the minnow bucket around. I think they absolutely are a great addition.

Actually I bet ice fishing wasn't even in the thought process when they copied the Genie Jar.  More for soft water, like for walking up a stream where you would leave your minnow bucket behind and be more mobile.  Would work for ice, could tuck it inside your jacket for hole hoppin.

Yep I think your right . I use a plastic coffee can with 1/2 a dozen minnows for tending . I think this rig would work good if freeze ups can be prevented .

bought 1 last year and works great. Keep 2 or 3 shiners in it in your pocket and always have them with you.

Would taping a hand warmer on the bottom of wrapping the tube with something help to prevent freeze ups?

mine never froze up, on real cold days put in your coat pocket but didn't really have to do that much.

I have one and I love it. I haven’t got to use it out on the ice yet, but it works great for when I’m out fishing in my kayak.

Got one last year, they're good for a few shiners like some one else mentioned.
Good to grab and throw in your pocket when having to check a flag.
Or keeping a few on hand when jigging.
Could live without it.

I got one on sale from there as well. I think it would be fine fishing in a shack. Will put it through the paces soon.

JiggingIowa is right on love mine it's great for a quick 1-2 hour trip also. I like to use it hole hopping and tipping a spoon with a minnow head and your fingers stay warmer. I change water about every half hour no complaints here.

Thanks for the feedback... from the replies seems like most hard water guys are using them as a mobile supplement to a regular minnow bucket.

If you are looking for a way to hole hop with half a dozen minnows, the bait pucks work awesome.  You can put 6 or 8 minnows in those with a little bit of water and they will stay alive for hours.  Works best for crappie minnows/fathead minnows.  Anything bigger than that and you'd want something that holds more water.
