Cold weather gloves that won't break the bank?
« on: Nov 10, 2017, 09:51 PM »
What are some of the best gloves for the 0 to slightly sub zero temperature ranges that won't break the bank. I just can't see myself spending $200+ for a pair of gloves right now.

Ragwool with fold-back finger mitt.  You can get many pair for the price of the high end stuff.

Once they get wet, don't they stay wet? or do they dry quickly and get back to warming?

Hard to beat wool inside of leather. Cover the leather with snow seal. Good to go.

Yes they tend to stay wet, though you can dry them over heat.

1) You can get multiple pair for a fraction of the high-cost gloves.
2) The magic of wool is that it continues to insulate when wet.

I have these and although I haven't ice fished in them, they're fantastic.

Otherwise, these might be a good option.  I'm considering grabbing a pair:

Go to a farm supply type store and buy a 12 pack of those yellow chore work gloves. I bring about 3 pairs with and always have a dry pair when needed. I stopped buying high end gloves because I am really good at losing them.

I use fleece style gloves  from my local Dollar Tree ...a buck a piece buy several pairs and stash them everywhere ...I cut off the  tips on the thumb and index fingers ...if they get wet or lost not a big deal just go to my stash . I also use a pair of chopper style mitts for the ride out on my ATV. I have tried other gloves ..neoprene ...wool etc...it just seems a good warm glove has limited dexterity ...If I  have  remove them to do maggot/minnow baiting for tip ups/jigging rods its not a smooth easy task ...the ease off removal of my Dollar Tree gloves via my arm pit is EZPZ.

Where's chubacca's arms?

I love my army surplus beaver backed mittens for the ride out when I don't need to use my fingers.

I use fingerless wool gloves. 100% dexterity, cheap, warm, works.

Keeping your neck properly covered and warm will also work wonders for keeping you’re extremities warm. That’s half the reason my fingers don’t get cold by wearing fingerless gloves. Also, when I say fingerless, my gloves are more like finger-tipless, they just use the word “fingerless”. The flip-over mitten style wool gloves work very well too. The flip part is just too bulky, for me, so I opt out of that option.

Over that last few seasons I’ve became a bigger advocate for wool. All that the “new” tech out is is just expensive cling wrap.....especially if you are ever in a fire. That polyester will melt right to your body like a microwaveable potato in shrink wrap. Wool.....will not.

My decision for wearing more wool comes from a deer camp story I read on a forum (from a member) told by an old timer. Their cabin had caught fire in the night. His camp mates (3-4 guys) wore “new” tech cold weather clothes and sleeping bags. The old timer wore wool and used a wool sleeping bag. Needless to say, when the fire was extinguished, his camp mates were encased in molten sleeping bags and the “new” tech clothes they had on. The old timer was the only survivor.

That’s pretty much what I think of when I see a pair of $200, synthetic, gloves. Expensive shrink wrap...

I go fingerless wool as my full time never come off glove. When it comes time to do any type of driving the wheeler or hoofing my sled I wear a pair of mits. I don't know the brand of mits off hand but the outer shell is some kind of dipped rubber and the inside looks to be fake wool. They are not perfect but they do the trick when I need them. Also just to mention a trick that I have come across in the archives, some guys have suggested wearing a tennis sweat band on your wrist and slip a hand warmer in. I can't confirm if it works but there were a lot of people vouching for it. I intend to put it to the test in the deer stand just for fun tomorrow.

Look for a deal on a pair made out of "Windstopper" fleece. Better than ragwool at stopping the wind, last longer than wool, lighter and dries faster and still retains heat when wet.

Ive been using these for 3 seasons, and they've held up fairly well. The orange fleece on the inside slips out a little bit, but that's about my only gripe. I've tried quite a few to this point, and the only style that works at providing agility when needed and warmth when not, is a flipover fingerless mitt. These particular ones are my personal favorite because they have a low profile, waterproof and have a spot for a hand warmer. Really good all around ice fishing glove.

Here's what I been wearing for last 12 years or so.  I usually have a hand warmer in each pocket of my carharrts and put my hands in the pockets between bites. I carry 2-3 pairs with in case I need to sacrifice one by reaching down the hole to grab a particularly nice specimen! ;D

Buy a couple pairs of whatever kind of liners are comfortable for you, the wool suggestion from others is good.  Then buy a waterproof over mitt like this.

https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Research-Revel-Shell-Mitts/dp/B00HPWSRRO?th=1&psc=1

Warm and waterproof plus you have the dexterity of gloves when you need it .

My go-to glove and pretty much the only cold weather glove I wear is the Military Surplus wool inserts. They come in olive green or black for about $5-$6 bucks.
