Searching for a bigger jigging minnow
« on: Oct 27, 2017, 07:45 PM »
Dear List;
I have been looking around for a jigging minnow for large lake trout. One that is 5-8 inches long. I checked out Rapela and got nothing although a number of years ago I had a floater that was all of ten inches.  I have tube jigs that are 6 or 7 inches but I need a huge jigging rap in gold color.  Any suggestions???

Might look at some saltwater butterfly jigs some of then tie middle body. Also might play with a large fluke bait and put a nail in the body should give it a jigging rap action. Also try drilling a hole in a good sized spoon mid body should give it a darting action.

Check this one on tackle direct. Williamson Abyss Speed Jigs

Does salmo make a chubby darter that size?

Big lakers eh? If you've got a rod to handle it here's a dandy option that is just catching on. I've used these to vertical jig for muskies for a number of years already and despite their plain jane appearance are incredibly effective in the right situations. The regular size weighs 7 oz. and the Magnum goes 11. Still...  He does have a "Wobbler" that has a different action that works well also. The mini version of that weighs in @ 4.4 oz. The Hot Orba line (another variation on the theme) weighs 5.6 oz.

Forgot about the Giant Chubby  ::) About 3.25 ounces. In that same vein a hard version of the Bondys:

6" and just under 4 oz.

I also wish they would make a 6 inch jigging rap. My preferred size sucker minnow for walleye on tip ups is 6 inch so why not for jigging? Around here the bait shops call them northern pike  suckers, I call them walleye suckers. What they call walleye suckers you could catch large perch and crappie.

Bondy's are pricy but as Walter Matheau would say, holy moly!  I would never have thought of musky jigs.  Great tip. Now to dig up some gold to buy them.

I would take one if you find any. Send me a pm I could mail you a check or do PayPal. I am to the point where I might try to make a bigger jigging rap type bait myself hand made. The big suckers out perform small suckers 3 to 1 here at first ice and they want $8-9 dollars a dozen for the big suckers.

Giant chubby darter is awesome toy.  Anyways Yozuri used to make the Edge Trembler Minnow.  It's a casting type of jigging lure.  It has a decent fall rate good enough for ice fishing. I haven't caught anything on it cuz I'm too busy with chubby darters.  I've been also thinking of the rapala subwalk lure as well.  Again to busy with chubby darters to experiment.  Storm made a somewhat similar lure to the Yozuri Edge Trembler Minnow, or it fished similar but wasn't popular.

I've never bought the larger ones, cuz they were meant for ocean fishing.  I think the largest I've got are either 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 inches long.

years ago i wanted the same thing.  i ended up modifying a rattle trap with "suspena strips", so it fished the way i liked it. it will do a spiral nosedive when dropped.  i have jigged up many bass, pike, and crappie(wth the tiny traps) over the years.  the thing i like best is the way it can call them from long distances.  you can hear it threw the ice with no problem when ripped.  i think it makes them mad because they hit that thing with gusto. lol  im betting lakers would come for it too.  dont have any of those around here to try it on. lol  rainbows hit it in summer so.....

The giant chubby 3.1 oz 5-1/2” I might have to break off the tip of one of my musky rods to jig it with. Lol

No mistake. Probably discoed. Don't forget you need a rod that will effectively work a 3.5 oz. lure. great price though!

Price + S/H + tax = about  $11+ per.

Jig head...plus your favorite 5-8" plastic.  Done.  Lakers will chase and eat ripping raps, rattle traps, darters, storm shads and all sorts of weird stuff.  The technique to get a bite is seemingly more critical most days.

I'm thinking about some sort of hollow belly minnow thing with a jighead rigged midships or thereabouts. Light and attractive. Hmmm. I knew a girl like that once.... ::)

I like the big circles that you can get the Chubby Darter to swim in and the vibration it gives out... One more tool in the box...

This looks like it's right up your alley Dave:

Naturally I'll be making my own version @ the workbench with some bullet weights and single strand leader wire. I can even powder paint 'em if I feel froggy but I'm not sure that's necessary. Yeah man!

I've been sort of experimenting for years weighing down open water cranks and sticks and not worth it in terms of fish catching.  It was fun way to waste time on the ice.
