Parasites in Fish?
« on: Jan 30, 2017, 01:46 PM »
Kept some trout the other day and cleaned them once I got home and 3 out of 4 had parasites in the body cavity. Also had some kokanee and they where good to go. I have kept trout from this lake before and the only thing I did different this time is I didn't put the fish on a stringer and back down the hole just tossed them on the ice. I have seen sea lice and other parasites in the mouths of catfish and that's it, nothing like these before. Is this common for trout.

A photo would be a big help in narrowing the broad field called "parasites".        ;)2

If you still have access to it/them, and need help posting a photo, I'll help with that.

No photo of them, but I'll try and describe them. They are thin, long, semi flat and an off white color. Thought they may be tape worms by they are ribbon like. Did find some that were also just a circle that looked like fat but once you uncoiled it, it was not fat it was a worm.

That is normal for trout (in our part of N/W Ontario at least).  Don't tell the wife about them and it will be fine.

Either you've just never seen them before, or they may not have been as noticeable as before
(Warm dry summers, mild winters).

They are probably experiencing a population growth if conditions are more favorable to that species.
(Again same conditions listed above).

The wife has seen them so now she want eat those fish. I filleted them out, so I guess I'll start cleaning them on the ice. Like I sad the only thing I did different was not putting them on a stringer and back down the hole.

That has nothing to do with parasites in the fish.

More fish for you to eat...yum!

I see little yellowish 1/8" worms in Bluegills all the time, they fry up, fish still tastes great.    Like the Michigan link, I have never seen them outside a fish, only under the skin.
