shanty costs$$??
« on: Feb 12, 2006, 06:54 PM »
hey everyone. I am gonna try my carpentry skills over the week. I am gonna try to make a

10X10 or an 8X8 , aobut 7 foot tall, slanted down to six foot tall. I definetly want some trap doors for jigging. um, not quite sure about a few of the details. but heck. I will play it along as I go. haha

so how much would something like this cost to make roughly?

the most important thing that I can say is if you have to move it alot make it light!!!!  I built my shanty this year out of a plastic I bought from a sign making company for 13.00 a sheet.  It is a little more than wood but it will never rot and it is lighter.  I also go to the saw mill and buy cedar 2x4 and have them rip them, although I think 1x2 would be strong enough.  I also love my bench with a flip up top for storage under.  lots of shelves and hooks!!!!  good luck and have fun take your time and do it right.

Here is a link to a post that has some good info:
http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?topic=3682.0

Its very easy to calculate, Use 8x8 as a base.
count your sides, 4 plus the roof and the floor. each side takes 1 1/2 sheets.
Then count the studs, 16 inch centers, floor jousts, roof trusses.
nails or screws are cheap. 2-4x4s for runners. Some metal U clamps to
attach rope or steel cable to tow the beast.
Heater, cushions, rod holders, shelfs, hooks!
Decide on the thickness of the plywood, if you are useing 2x2 or 2x4 studing
and then find out the pricing of wood in your area.
Good luck and keep us informed.

If you do choose  plywood for sidewall and roof get a 5 gallon pail of fibered mobile
home roof coating and paint the outside with it.  It works well.  The problem with
most larger shanties is they are constantly freezing into the ice and require some
prop boards.  Post some pics when you get her done.

I built an 8x8 this year, you may have seen it, it made every paper on Earth last week when it sank on Saratoga Lake.  Anyway, we had about 1/4 of the lumber donated, and I still spent about another $400 on screws, caulk, bits, saw blade and lumber.  My buddy spent cash on insulation, hinges, pleui for windows, fender washers and nut/bolt combos to fasten windows.  We had a door donated, but if you don't, there's another expense.  Roofing materials are costly, as are quality sealers for the outside.   All said and done, I bet we have about $700 invested and probably about $300 of donated materials.

If you plan to be on one or two ponds all season, then invest in a hardside.  If you plan to hit up a bunch a different lakes, I'd spend the money on a portable.  They are a lot more versitle and are off the ice when your done at the end of the day... Just a thought... ;D
