Monster Gator
« on: Jan 08, 2017, 09:27 AM »
Yesterday me and some friends fished Marshfield Res. We went back and forth about were to fish either there or green river res. It is a longer ride for me as i was traveling from St. Albans. So we fished most of the day with very little to show for it I caught two perch both about 11 inches two very small pike and about 500 dink perch all under 4 inches. There has to be 500 million of those little perch in there. we were talking about picking up soon before we lost light as it was going to get colder out. It wasn't much longer after that that my buddy said you have a flag. We got over to it and it looked like the trigger had barley been set, I began to take up line and it was slack nothing there. i pulled in about 5 feet when i suddenly picked up a log! It began to come towards me but once it got near the hole took off like a rocket. I fought her for a while and final got a glimpse of her as she passed the hole, she was a MONSTER! She ran a few more times and i was finally able to get her head turned up the hole but was unable to get her she then took off again. This time wrapping the line on the back side of her jaw. we got her back under the hole and my buddy went in after her up past his elbow. Major assist goes to him on this one! 41inches 16.2lbs. Biggest fish i have ever caught!

Awesome trophy. That one will be tough to top.

Congrats on the great Northern!  Very fat! She's definitley been gorging herself on thousands of perch. 40+ inchers seem to be extremely elusive and catching one is a HUGE accomplishment, in my mind.   Maybe someday I'll get to catch one that big. It certainly takes a lot of luck to get one to bite and a lot of skill to get them up the hole, seeing as how the big ones know exactly how to throw a hook or break you off!
Great Job Smelty88. That's one for the photo album!

Awesome fish!! I've seen some monsters in that res in the spring up shallow. I wish the state would introduce walleye in there to help with all those small perch. Same goes for Groton IMO.

Here is a better picture of the fish with the real hero of the day (who picked the lake, picked the spot, got on the ice 2 hours before the others in -7 weather to secure the prime location, and went almost shoulder deep in the hole to gill the beast)... That hero of course is myself!
