Was sharpening my chisel at work today and one of the guys said if its too sharp it will just shave ice.it will chip better if its alittle dull.i never thought about it ,what your opinion.

Never heard that theory. Could make sense. I think as long as you have it reasonably sharp you'll be good. Razor sharp isn't strictly necessary.

Sharper the better in my opinion! My lightweight chisel is technically a wood chisel head. Its VERY sharp and cuts the hardest black ice with ease, just ask anyone that's used it. My other chisel is still very sharp but not quite as sharp as the lightweight one, it will penetrate 4"-5" in one chop! This is just my experience, too each their own. I'll add this THINNER the blade, better the penetration!

Dull chisel compared to sharp is like trying to drive in a bolt instead of a screw.

I like my chisels like I like my friends....sharp and sturdy, not dull and weak!

Sharp ..but not a thin edge..you want a sharp "work" edge...like a boning knife...not a thin slicing edge like a filet knife...it's all about durability... Mils Lac chisel by Jiffy are versatile and cut quickly...Mine is always with me...it replaced one I made from a truck spring and iron pipe 45 years ago..

These are my 2 chisels, one was made for popping caps off holes and keeping them open and clean on cold days. To my surprise it worked much better than anticipated though! My good chisel is over 50 years old and still cuts like it was made yesterday.

made from good steel..it will last forever...see the angle of the cutting edge.. there in lies the secret.. simualr to the edge on a axe made for durability...

Those tools are pretty cool. All they are missing is a Viking to carry them:)
