Sylvan at GSP
« on: Jan 01, 2017, 03:46 PM »
Anyone walk out at Gene Stratton Porter today?  Still snow or ice on the trail through the woods?  Edge of lake OK?  Planning on going tomorrow, just wondering what it's like, thanks.

Don't you need a permit to access there? I would love to go but don't have a permit, I've heard they only sell so many permits.

No permit required.  Public parking lot with marked trail to lake.  Plenty of water and fish.  Makes quick ice and holds good.  Main bay in front of GSP had about 7" last weekend and there were several quads out there.  We had 75 good fish last Saturday mainly gills, some crappie, and one perch.  I assume it's still very good ice just wondered what the current conditions are.

I was out there today, would say there is about 4-5 inches of ice. Quads were able to drive on it fine. I missed the morning bit, but there wasn't much of a evening bit. The edge of the lake is fine at GSP, they are starting to melt slightly, but were froze over when I came back in.

Almost 300 views and these are the replies?!  I hope someone in the crowd that shows up tomorrow brings me donuts!  I'll have a black striker coat on with camo bottoms.

You're talking about an almost 700 acre lake with 16 miles of shoreline.

There are plenty of good lakes in NE IN right now that have great fish in them that won't have a single truck in the parking lot tomorrow.  When I can't get in the GSP parking lot in the morning I will drive a couple miles to one of the other lakes in the area and catch fish there.  All I was looking for is feedback from the guys that were out there today of the snow conditions in the woods on the trail because it's a long walk and they had 5+ more inches of snow than we got here in Fort Wayne and what the 10' of shoreline looks like at the access point.   Thought it was a simple question to answer and I didn't think I was giving up any trade secrets.

Thin the fish in that lake - laughable, and croweded on 700 acres, are you kidding me?  True you can't park everywhere but I've never seen that lake where it was so crowded you couldn't get away from people and catch fish.  Unless you don't know how to find your own fish.

Very little snow left on the path thru the woods,  measured 7" of ice on the lake, tons of guys fishing Brady's.  Only about a dozen guys fishing the GSP bay, pretty crowded!!!  Got enough for a meal, was happy to be able to find a place to park.

I drilled about 40 in 3 different locations, hop away!  Go over to bradies, there are hundreds of open holes over there.

last friday GSP wasnt good for me and the boy only landed 2 fish.  drilled bunch of holes couldn seem to find them last year had couple outings like that there. go me a good place to park now no long walks anymore.  lol

Im renting a place on big lake but not been on yet open water tonight.  went out looking a all the other lakes around to see where I should fish.  Sylvan is my place I like to summer fish so always like going there.  I will be learning these lakes around here to fish this year.
