oneida lake ice fishing
« on: Feb 09, 2006, 06:01 PM »
first of all  hello.
bigbay has 2 inches of ice on it at this time was making ice today pretty good, looking to be able to fish it by monday ,wednesday by the lastest.
main lake has 1 inch on itwalked on it by shore is shakey ice very flexable probale 2 weeks or more before any doings on it.
walnut bay has 11/2 inches of black ice on it .
polar bay has a solid 5 to 6 inches on it, need permission to park somewhere to get on though.
shore point has 51/2 to 61/2 inches on it need permission to park to get on.
took a few perch and sunfish today from both.
well keep everyone informed on the ice daily.
all theses places are black ice with 2 inches of snow on them.
fill your buckets with quality not quantity and enjoy the conversations over heard of how good a fisherman you are................... ....

today as of 800am there was 31/2 inches of ice on bigbay, with 3 inches of snow.
did not go out .
on main lake there was 2 inches of solid ice up to 20 feet out maybe further, i only went out that far.
polar and shore point bays are very safe.

I grew up on the south shore and if you were looking at aero marina from the lake, the bay to the left we always called "lower south bay" never really had a name for the bay on the right...actually only fished it in the summer for largemouth and northerns....which one is the one that is being called polar beach?...always did great on the sunfish and bluegills in the bay on the left...course that was 20 some years ago :-\

Fished big bay Sunday afternoon. I was one of the two out there in dome tents. The ice is only 11/2-2in by shore. Once you get out into the bay where the wind is blowing there is 4-5 inches. Fished all over the bay and did not see one bluegill. Picked up a few dink perch only with 1 about 8 in. Where do all the fish go? Never fished the bay this late. Maybe they search for deeper warmer water? Let me know if you guys have had a similar experience.

lake isnt fully frozen so it doesnt look good... they like to hang around with the eyes so you have to fish them deep...usauly in 20-30 feet of water..im heading to big bay tomm for some pannies that seems to be all you can get to as of rite now...zeke

Not many people fish for burbot on this lake. I have caught them in the past while walleye fishing at Lewis Point.(have not heard any reports from that area)

I agree. Never met someone that wanted to target them. If you want to add a new species though I would fish tipups in around 30 ft. That means the east side of the lake. Put a medium sized minnow about a foot off bottom. We always considered them a pain in the ass when we were tryin to get the eyes.

Speaking of the 'eyes, when do they usually start hitting? Or is it just a matter of the ice getting thick enough in the right places?

We need ice in the right places not just the Bays. Once we have that we can get to the Walleyes
