Power auger
« on: Dec 28, 2016, 03:57 PM »
What does everyone recommend for a power auger? I was thinking in the lines of a jiffy, strike master or Eskimo. It would have to be at least and 8" because I do a lot of walleye, pike and Muskie fishing. Had a jiffy years ago and it was really heavy hoping to get one that's not so heavy as I am getting older lol. I know nothing about the electric and propane models. There are days I drill a lot of holes in search of the walleyes. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks

I've used an Eskimo Shark 51cc for the last five years. Hopefully won't jinx myself but it has been fine. It has the 8" auger. Starts on the second/third pull and no problem idling. I do use ethanol free gas mixed to a 50:1 ratio with their Vipor oil. Hope this helps. I'm sure there are a lot of different opinions including going non-gas.  Lou

Ive got an eskimo stingray 33, and will have a shark z51 as of tommorow when ups gets here. The 33 ran flawless hope the z51 does the same. Remember to periodicly go through them  and tighten up screws and bolts before you start loosing them.

I'll be using ethanol free fuel from now on. I have a strikemaster lazer mag about 5 or 6 years old. It has been good to me for sure. Gas drained every season. This season the ethanol full use over the years played havoc on the carb diaphragms and now needs a carb job (parts ordered).......

I have a jiffy pro lite  or i use a clam plate both with 6" augers because i mainly fish for panfish, but have pulled 30" muskies throu a 6"hole a few times. Last year my jiffy never even saw the ice, this year i screwed on a cylinder and started in 2 pulls( i do nothing for winter storage). But if you like a 8" hole I would look at a Ion, you cant beat just pulling a trigger and drilling, IMO. My clamplate is my go to.

I have an Eskimo Mako.  Runs and cuts fine, But if I were to do it over I'd go for the drill / auger combo.  Much lighter, quieter, no gas, etc. etc..

I have and recommend the Eskimo Mako, they're cut through the ice like a champ, and go for around $300 at Glen's with free shipping.

I have had really good luck with strikemaster lazer.thay are pretty light at 27lb  really like what I have seen and heard about jiffy propane light it's like a pd or 2 heavier.the Eskimo seems fine but comes in at low 30lbs I think 33 so they are not worth the weight to me.

If I was going to get a propane auger I'd get the Eskimo HC-40 because it has a full five year warranty and you don't have to lay it down one specific way.  My friend had a Jiffy propane auger and it wouldn't run because he forgot to lay it down the right way.  He called Jiffy and they replaced it for him because it was under warranty.

I went with the Milwaukee. When I need a larger hole I drill a second hole next to the first. We are at 20" of ice and it's a real quick process. Plus reversing the drill clears the slush. Not only did I get rid of my gas auger, I got rid of my scoop.
