...and so it begins
« on: Dec 15, 2016, 09:46 AM »
Let me start this post with a caveat: This is in no way intended to be harsh, belittling or demeaning in any way.

I see there are some new members, who like myself, are chomping at the bit to do some ice fishing. Believe me, I am antsy as heck to cut a hole.
With that said, I am also savvy enough (been through too many times) to know what lines not to cross. I will most certainly be ice fishing this weekend and encourage everyone to do the same, so long as you know exactly what you are doing and have a plan. There can be absolutely no haphazard approach to this sport at this time of year.

Know this: If you are a newcomer and ask about ice conditions anywhere and don't get a response, its mostly because others don't want to feel responsible in the event of an accident. My advice is to stick with what your gut tells you is safe. If that is the infamous channel that everyone fishes at first ice, so be it. You will have people around you that can help pull your rear side out if the unexpected happens. If it is a farm pond (that you know the ice is safe) that limits you to catching stunted bluegill and largemouth, so be it.

I pretty much share info within a clique because I know for a fact that if someone (with eyes in that area) says "yeah you can get on", they completely know that I will do my own due diligence once my feet are inside my boots. The same holds true for what I say!

Carry a spud, rope and flotation. Have your cell phone in a water proof bag. Keep a warm change of clothes in your vehicle.

Also, and maybe most important, don't give up because you are new and it seems like people aren't sharing. Reach out to members and most times you will be fishing with a partner. Strength in numbers!

It's the Holiday season and not one person on this board wants to hear about a wife or husband and kids waking up on Christmas Morning without their spouse or father/mother! PERIOD!

Right now is the time to exhibit patience over everything else! God Bless and tight lines!

Well said jigmup. And go with someone or where others are nearby.  Remember late ice a few years ago on Summit with Terry James. That was to close, he was a very lucky guy that day.

Excellent. There is no fish worth dying for or trying to be the first guy to post pics of your catch.

I was always told, never be the first guy on the ice or last guy off the ice.

This is a great thread!! Got me thinking about a post I made on Waveland ice and I removed it. Also like to add for new members that a lot of times it's better to call a baitshop in the area you'd like to fish,,,,,if possible, too see where guys are fishing.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.
