Looking for a new smelt supplier
« on: Dec 14, 2016, 04:49 AM »
Well after many, many years, the only local grocery in Ludington that still sold whole, frozen smelt we use for tipups has said they will not be carrying it anymore.  Looking for any place within about a 2 hour drive from here that carries 6"-9" jumbo smelt.  Please and thanks!

Green Lake!  Of course you have to catch them first.

Haha, I wish.  I have a few acquaintances that go up to Crystal Lake in Beulah to do that, but I don't have the time, knowledge, or equipment.  Pike is just about all I do.

2 years back I found a place inClio , ( I think) . a fish market. I will do some research and see if I can find it again, Do you do as well with dead bait? That said live bait is expensive

When I got into it I messed around with both sucker minnows and dead smelt on swedish hooks.  They fished relatively equal, but I seemed to lose more Pike with the minnows on treble hooks and the convenience of just pulling some smelt out of the freezer the day before and having it thawed and ready to go beats keeping bait alive.
