Calculating Ice Thickness (Ashton Method)
« on: Dec 10, 2016, 08:43 AM »
I'll just put this out there, and say that last year this seemed to be helpful. Tread lightly.

I like to sit around on the ice doing nothing because my wife won't let me do it at home.

Living in Michigan this rarely is true though because of snow cover

Yeah any snow on the ice completely throws things off.

yeeeeah... I like the hit it with a spud method followed with the drill a hole and measure it method. Seems a bit safer than guestimating.

Ashton Kutcher?
If it passes the ruler test, put it in the ice chest. Hook it and cook it.

There is another way to test the ice, I have seen it done several times, but have never tried it myself. Walk out on the ice & start jumping up & down, if it holds you, its good ice . ;D ;D.   I use a spud!

I prefer the spud method as well!

Having a chart to use as a reference is a good idea, but it will come down to what each of us feels comfortable enough to walk on.

For me, early ice will have me using my spud to check the shore ice safety before venturing out.
Then it becomes a "drill & measure" routine.

During the winter, if I try new or unfamiliar ice (ice I haven't fished regularly) I will "D & M" out to where I want to fish.

I also find that if you know about the body of water beforehand, like if it's spring fed, has inlets and outlets, is prone to surface currents.
That will give you an idea of what to expect as you venture out.

On familiar waters, I will be more confident and will check less regularly as I head out, but I still do the shoreline check no matter where I fish.

Most important of all, I follow my gut feeling.

If it doesn't feel right or safe, I stay off!
