Having a chart to use as a reference is a good idea, but it will come down to what each of us feels comfortable enough to walk on.
For me, early ice will have me using my spud to check the shore ice safety before venturing out.
Then it becomes a "drill & measure" routine.
During the winter, if I try new or unfamiliar ice (ice I haven't fished regularly) I will "D & M" out to where I want to fish.
I also find that if you know about the body of water beforehand, like if it's spring fed, has inlets and outlets, is prone to surface currents.
That will give you an idea of what to expect as you venture out.
On familiar waters, I will be more confident and will check less regularly as I head out, but I still do the shoreline check no matter where I fish.
Most important of all, I follow my gut feeling.
If it doesn't feel right or safe, I stay off!
