2016 ice reports
« on: Dec 08, 2016, 09:58 AM »
Ok guys it's here let's get the ice reports going I had to run some errands this morning and a backwater pocket off of the river in my town was completely iced over so I went and checked a local subdivision that has 3 lakes 2 of them have ice all the way around them out about 3 feet from shore and the third on that is smaller about an acre in size and protected from the wind is completely covered except for a 20 foot hole in the corner the geese are trying to keep open so hopefully Monday I'll be cutting ice
early mornings,cold north winds,hard ice,good friends and cold high life..FLAG UP!.priceless

Saw a small pond this morning in the Quad Cities with a skim layer.  Nothing high in the forecast, so we should be out w/in a week.

some skim ice around ponds that aren't sheltered around the bolingbrook area. wind is really doing a number right now. almost don't want the ice to form until after the predicted snow(s) this weekend.

How much will the snow affect the ice building? They are calling for a decent amount

The pond in my town was iced over this morning and was completely open last night when I drove by at 9 pm. If we do not get much snow and we get the low temps they are talking about we should be able to cut holes by next weekend.
I fish therfore I am

Drilled a couple holes close to shore at the canal in Geneseo. Ice is still about an inch to an inch and a half. I weigh 145 and the ice was cracking each step I took.

2 inches of ice at most at the canal in Geneseo. Bluegills and bass are biting very well. There are some spots that have small holes with water coming up so watch your step.

We drilled a couple of holes yesterday over lunch on a small pond in the QC.  Didn't do any fishing, just checking the ice.  It was a solid 2".

Shallow backwater areas should have fishable ice this weekend, but you better think about using a shanty and plan on a slow bite with the coming high pressure system that will be rolling in.

Just got back from checking a small pond by me there was 2.5" everywhere I drilled but with the weight of all the snow from the other day it is pushing water up in every hole I drilled decided to give it a couple more days i told my wife I must becoming a sissy in my old age 10 years ago I would have fished the crap out of it and not thought twice about it and she said no your just not as much of a dumb a$$ now that your over 40 you have finally become an adult maybe she's right guess I'll just sit here in front of the fireplace and take a nap

same here, found some ice that I would be fishing right now if this were last year or the year before.  I'm willing to wait another 24 hours for the freeze   :)

With the awesome string of cold days we've had, there's no reason to push it this year.  We probably have safe ice now, but for sure will by Friday.  Hopefully we're in for a long and successful ice season.
