Fishing reel?
« on: Jan 28, 2016, 06:36 PM »
Since  I will not be able to fish until  Saturday night  and Sunday  i though about .....   nothing  to do with ice fishing.  Well  I just  bought 2 penn senator  9/0 combos.   Does anyone know  how tight to tighten  down  the star drag.  I know it has 30 lb drag max but not sure if that means tighten down  all the way! If anyone has any info please  inform  me. Thanks

good god what ya using it for a winch? lol  well if the drag only goes to 30 then its under gunned and youll be burning your thumb.  always felt that drags on my big gear were way too light.  big reels are probably around 30# drag too.  i never tested them though. i have had 40#bg poppped a few times on fast runs.

Well  they are for up too 10_ 12 foot sharks!  The 400 lb weed eater line is just for shock and it is tied too steel  cable.   The 9/0 reel is standard  for land based  shark  fishing with a 35 pound drag lol ... but I just don't know if that means tighten it down  all the way.    Little to big for flat heads lol

I live in Florida now and fish saltwater a few times a week and commonly mess around with 300+ pound Goliath grouper and big bull sharks.. What exactly are you asking? How tight to set your drag?

Yes they say it has a maximum  of around 35 lb of drag.    So does that mean  I tighten  the star drag all the way? Thanks

thanks!  Thought about that. That being said I can not pull it when  I tighten  down  all the way.  I know I'm pulling  harder then 35 lbs.

You just gotta play it by ear. If you tighten it all the way you will most likely pull the hook after some time because that will be your weak point in the rig. Also I recommend 100 pound power pro with a top shot of mono to a 6 ft section of leader if you will be fishing from the beach. Kayak your cut bait out and drop it between the 2nd and 3rd sandbar and sit tight and wait.

Nope, just a live pinfish. We were fishing for amberjack and these guys were all over the place. That one was a little over 200 pounds but we get them over 400 pounds out there.

Permits. Mine was Catch  and release.   Some guys used there kill permits and used the tarpon for shark bait

I believe  it is 2 per day no size limit  but you have to buy a permit to keep

I think if a reel is listed as a certain lb of drag that is what u get when tightened down fully.  I usually try to set my drag after loading the rod and not by pulling straight off the reel.  You don't fight a large fish with with your rod pointed right at the fish which would mimic pulling the line straight off the reel. The rod plays a big role in drag setting and line size and what size fish you can handle with both.

bucky test it with a scale bud.

bingo set it this way to 20% of the break strength of the line which is about 16# pounds for 80 pound line... at the reel the friction threw the guides multiplies it's strength  you will see.. then you can fine tune it from there meaning tighten it will be lose at first and you adjust it a tad tighter as the fish runs.... I adjust it so the line hums...  if over tensioned it will break..  if you set it at 35# thats full drag  and good for like 150-200 pound test class line or tuna class tackle for tuna...  that is probably why they did not have your get a general purpose penn with the small 10 and 15 number drag poundage.. you set the drag with a spring scale to the weight needed off the reel meaning at the reel then string the rod...      see the leader is to protect for bite offs which I think you said 400#test  but the class line is what you set the drag to off the reel with a scale which is 80# test on yours??
