Well here is a twist
« on: Jan 21, 2016, 10:30 AM »
Well here is a twist to ice fishing. While setting out to do some Walleye and Crappie through the ice a new found favorite has emerged. CARP yes I said CARP. Carp have become more and more accepted among anglers due to their size strength and a lot of times the challenge that they provide. Now think of these fish that are known for large powerful runs on a ice fishing rod with 6 lb test. To top this off we are using jigging and bladed baits that we are using to catch the Walleye. HD Ice, Thinfish, Reef Runner Cicadas, Red Eye Shad, and Jigging Raps have all produced. Oh and by the way we are getting the Walleye and a few Crappie as well. But these golden, fat lipped hard fighting fish are fast become a favorite.

I have to agree. My best fish fish this summer was a 32" carp at Chatfield. Great battle!! (I still don't know how to insert a picture).

Y'all should see the Asian carp back east. While we're running LiDAR to map the rivers they just jump in the boat.  Big ones.  One summer a few yrs ago we had several windows busted out cause them buggers.  Everyday you'd have to hose the boat out from all the fish flopping around getting blood and slime on everything.  The vibration sets them off and then the water turns to popcorn.  We run twin 250 OB's, let one idle and rev the other.  Enough carp to fill a dump truck.  So I hate them, all of them!
Doing it better than I did it yesterday.

Yeah baby. Common carp, Cyprinus Carpus, can be a blast to catch. They're geared real low and seem to have about 20% more moxie than a channel cat of equal size. Very popular in Eastern Europe and among certain ethnic groups in this country as table fare. Any of Slayer's favorite gar recipes would work for carp also I'd imagine.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Very nice.  Had to be some drag screaming fun there.  Only ever caught one carp through the ice up at Douglas Res right in the flooded brush.  I don't know "jack" about how to find them consistently but might have to give them a try sometime.

Mind sharing at what depth those are found? I know of a few lakes out here that hold big ones.

I also caught one on my lure open water. I felt a bump and actually snagged it in the tail. Try pulling one of those in by it's tail. Took a long time to get it in on my 6 Lb test Medium action rod.

Mine were right off the bottom in 27 feet of water on a white tube jig. Caught 3 that day.

They are the trout of Europe!!! Why ya think they brought them with them!!!
Asain Carp
They where brought here to clean commercial catfish ponds up and the Mississippi delta and farther north.. They escaped into the Mississippi River durning the Great Flood of 1993. They are plant eaters and destroy spawning grounds for every other fish in the river. They also spawn 2-3 times a year -each female can lay 1,000,000+ eggs each time. They stink, slimy and aint worth a crap- so the feed them to the prison inmates and here in Illinois we ship around 30,000 lbs a month back to China where thay come from. They are now considered an invasive species!!!

Yes but, they taste so good.  I believe the Trout of Europe is the Common Carp.  The Asian Carp came from Asia.

The carp above are not Asian carp. I agree the Asian carp are a true nuisance.  The common carp has been here since early settlers. Brought as a source of food.

That looks fun!  I've never caught a carp through the ice.  They're a blast to catch in open water.

Those are some hefty carp!! A lot of old timers on the east coast like eating carp, mostly Eastern Europeans. Pickled along with pike, smelt, herring, whitefish etc. One day I'll give them a try. Preferably from a clear, flowing river. Most traditional gifilte fish is carp, along with the others mentioned.
