Pre work pike
« on: Jan 13, 2016, 03:17 PM »
Fished this morning for 7am to 10am before work. Caught the normal 30+ dink perch. Did have the pike rod go down twice, only landed one.

32" fat healthy female

Was really wanting some mid 20" fish to pickle, this girl went back down the hole.
Jiggin up jumbos!

Beauty.  Those HG fish are sure plump.

Do you care to share your pickling recipe/method?  I've never done that before.

Pickled pike:
Step1
 3-4lbs pike fillets y-bones and all (1"cubes)
1 gallon white vinegar
2 cups pickling salt
1 gallon glass pickle jar

Place pike in jar, add salt, fill jar with vinegar.
Put lid on jar and shake softly to mix.
Place jar in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, once a day flip jar upside down and then back up right to mix up salt.

Step 2
Remove Pike from jar,  rinse with cold water.
 Rinse and clean jar.
Add 4 cups white vinegar, 4 cups white wine half a cup of pickling spice, and 2 1/2 cups sugar (mix thoroughly)
Then add six whole cloves of garlic, and two onions sliced into rings, and pike.
Flip jar upside down and back up right to make sure it's mixed well.
Place back in refrigerator for 7 days, flip it over once in a while to mix it up.

After 7 days it's ready to enjoy.

I might have to give this a try. I've never had pickled fish.
Doing it better than I did it yesterday.

It has been cold,  below zero all morning. I had to rush to get the fish back in the hole to keep her from freezing up.

Great fish handling etiquette! I am glad to see you setting an example for selective harvest on them in your neck of the woods. It aint been pretty up there much like the Mile. But when numbers are down, quality is up!

Really fine specimen there.

Thanks for the pickling recipe.  Now all that's needed is one cooperative pike!  Gotta give this a try.
