Been Building..
« on: Dec 29, 2015, 05:49 PM »
Have extra time on my hands this season so I have been keeping myself occupied in my shop.

My pop up ice tent had only a rope on it which makes it tough to pull in long distances on the rough trails behind the quad so I built a draw bar hitch for it. Ran a 1" angle iron the full width of the sled and bolted it through the outer lip. Hitch is on hinges on both ends so its fully flexible for those long rough trails.

I have a large calf sled for the trips when you take lots of stuff in or for the overnight long hauls but most times I like to run and gun and stay on the hunt for the fish much like summer fishing so for this one has to be mobile. I built a custom ice fishing quad box that packs all my equipment plus any extra clothing I may need. Its a bit large but it won't stay on for hunting just for the ice season. The box is made out of 3/8 Fur ( I like working in Fur its a durable wood) Its all glued and stapled,, its built to last. Box has a double flip lid with built in rod storage. Also built some rod holders for the quad one on each side.

Wow. That's awesome. That wooden box is really impressive. What thickness of plywood did you use to make it?

That is fantastic! The part that I really like is the rod storage built into the lid. Fantastic job!

Thx..

I built it out of 3/8 Fur. I like Fur as it's a hard wood compared to spruce. If one used spruce I would suggest going 1/2 but that would add to the weight. 3/8 spruce wood work but would not be as durable. As you can see in one of the pics all the edges length ways and uprights are gueseted full lengths and glued and stapled from both edges.

Nice rig. I made something similar. My box is a little smaller and I have an auger mount on the front.

Cool,, would like to see some pics of it.

We run gas power augers up here and I usually run my 8" at that. couple that with some of the long rough back woods trails we head down having that big auger banging a guy in the back would suck lol. If I don't take the tent or a sled along I just lay the auger across the front rack and throw the winch line over it and give it a suck down.

Looks good.
I like to add a spring to all my hitches.
Really helps keep the hitch anchor points from getting destroyed.
Especially if loaded heavy or on rough terrain.

I like your box set up, everything has it's own place so it's easy to know if you're forgetting something if you're in a hurry.

Haven't figured the picture thing out yet. But I should figure it out with all this non fishing time I have.

No they don't fold away. I built them to sit back from the fenders so they don't hook brush when traveling down the right trails we sometimes travel on.

Took everything out for a test run today. Did some running and gunning for Walleye. Not much luck,, a few hits but no stickers. Will give them a good go over the next couple days. Everyting worked just like planned lol..

Thx Gentlemen..

Yah it is a nice shop I pretty much live in there when not away at work. It's a life long dream come true. It's a 40x 50 with 16' walls all equipped with pretty much all a guy needs for most any build. Still want to add a 220 volt air compressor and a small lathe/mill is in the works as well.
