South lake Curtis? Or lake Gogebic ?
« on: Dec 22, 2015, 08:58 PM »
I'm putting together an ice fishing weekend, 8 to 12 guys,
A couple of them are not avid fishermen and are bored quickly if we aren't catching. The rest of us could fish 24 hours straight, catching or not. We'd need a place to stay ( recommendations please) preferably on the lake, we walk or snow shoe to fishing. And what month is the hottest for pan fish on either lake or area?
Looking forward to hearing from all.
I fish in my local area a lot Keweenaw/ Houghton, but have never ice fished either Gogebic or Curtis area.

If you are after numbers of panfish (Perch) I would not recomend Gogebic.   Gogebic is not a numbers lake for Perch, it is a more a tropy Perch Lake with 14"-15" 1 3/4lb -2lb perch fairly common.  The locals on Gogebic compare it to whitetail deer hunting where you are sitting and waiting for that fish of a lifetime.   I consider a 5fish day a fairly good day, it can be more productive but it is very hit and miss.  Lake Gogebic is a huge body of water 17miles long.  There are numerous areas to walk out from and a bunch of resorts to stay at, but you may not be in greatest areas.  Too truly access the perch areas you normally need a snowmobile, and a good reliable one with some horespower, Gogebic can have heavy snow loads and a lot of slush that can be over knee deep in places.  Normally 4 wheeler travel is not recomended in the heart of winter.   Check out the facebook Group - "Lake Gogebic Perch Preseveation" for free advice, or www.mapleridgemotel.co m

I just got home from Gogebic. Fished north end of lake. Bring 3 tipup's per guy and you will have a riot chasing flags. Nothing big but you will catch a lot of walleye.

Hear of any perch? Realistically, can you get to the perch by foot travel? Or do you have to wait for more ice and head WAY out to the main lake flats?

We were on Gogegic this past weekend as well, and he is 100% correct about the flag chasing.  It was non-stop every evening for about 2 hours.  We landed well over 100 legal walleye in 3 days between 4 of us, but nothing over 17''.  As of Sunday, the only thing that had safe ice was Bergland Bay, but it shouldn't be long now that the temps are dropping.
Keep Your Stick on the ICE!!!

We were out last Saturday, did ok on perch about 200 yards off of the boat launch at Bergland. Around 6 feet of water.  Heading out tomorrow to try our luck again.  It's been nice with little snow on the ice.

he's a little ways out of bergland, look for maple ridge motel, he and his wife own it and the bait shop, he's usually pretty well stocked on all minnos and wigglers. he will get you pointed in a good direction on the lake.

What kinda light setup are you running on your tipups I like that you can see it spin at night looks like it has a trigger that mounts on the flag shaft?

Not sure on the name brand. Bought a couple years ago from bait store when i was fishing Little bay de noc. The thing on the flag is a magnet that holds down to the spinner. Works great and never get false flag from the wind tripping it.
