Sorry trap, gotta disagree. The angle of the point makes it a circle. Not good or bad, right or wrong, just different.

Yeah, I think its a bait holder. I tie with them too for some stuff. Circle hooks shank bends into itself more, not just the point

That's why I'm switching to powder paint ;D

Just waiting for some fluid bed cups for my setup. I gave up testing different stuff for membrane. Must have tried 20 different things  from felt to printer paper. Even tried parchment paper. For $4.50 a piece I bought them from TJ Tackle.

I did find membrane for sale, but I'm not too interested in taking out a mortgage to buy a little square of it.

OK trap, we got it from the horse's mouth. I owe you a coffee ;D. I am still a little befuddled by that particular hook. Here's my issue: everything about it says "baitholder" except the angle of that hook point. See below:

Now here's a more conventional circle:

That said, I've never seen a circle with a turned down eye..... Turned up or straight but never down.

Not me...I had two, older brothers. Both a real pain in the rear. They used to go at it all the time then the loser would take it out on me. That was till I got to be around 16 or so. Dad decided that my next oldest brother and I should settle our differences so he got ahold of a couple pairs of boxing gloves.

He set us up in the basement and while my brother was trying to get his gloves on, I walked over and turned his lights off....bare fisted.....one shot.

Dad said, " Well, I guess that settles that!". It did!

But I wax fraternal ::)

I've been tying backwards nymphs. I'll be on the ice this weekend....finally.

RGFIXIT, I need help. A new friend of mine gave me some flies to try for ice fishing. I would like to try some this weekend, but I don't know how to tie a dropper knot. I've seen some videos on how to tie them, but not with a small fly (pass the loop through the eye of the hook). Any help please?

Put the fly on the line first than tie your dropper loop.

dropper loop

Might take a little practice. You've got those ham hands like mine ;D

You can always use a Polomar if it's easier.

Let me know how they work for you.

how I would do it is do the dropper loop... then attach by a Albright knot to the dropper loop a short section of light mono then tie your knot whit one line not two....or do it per link below...... see my dropper rig loop is made this way...  I use the same first knot on your shoe lace and just do it several times then pull the loop threw the middle by making a whole threw the wraps.... if you make it big enough you can cut the line and tie on a single line like in this link...

Here's the knot I use, it's simple...The Drop Shot Rig...it works great in the summer too. Just put a small jig or bell sinker on the bottom of the lake, with the fly about a foot up and keep the line tight to the rod tip...also called "tight lining"...if the tip moves, that's a bite and just lift...same thing in the winter; but more jigging is necessary...jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, hop, hop, hop...that's where the jig or swedish pimple works best...in the summer a bell sinker with a bare hook, or fly, above it baited with a small buckeye or fathead minnow is just the ticket...1" gulp minnows work well too...you can drift along and not snag the bottom with a bell sinker...just make sure the point of the hook or fly is up like in the picture...it sticks the fish in the upper lip... ;D
I use a small plain rounded snap with no swivel on the end of my line, that way I can change sinkers or lures quickly without retying. The deeper you are, the more weight you want to get back down there quickly... ;) Good luck

Looking good big guy!

Got my cups for the fluid bed yesterday. Super fast shipping from TJ's Tackle. I'm heading out on the ice this morning for a while then I'm gonna get a toaster oven. The alcohol lamp is too hot for ice jigs.

A toaster oven is the nuts for powder painting. Keeps an even temp, never melts lead. I run mine @ 350 for everything. I usually have a pile to cure so I use the kitchen for that. Minimal odor that doesn't linger. Just a reminder to clean hook eyes and points before curing or it's much more work that it should be.... ;)
