Bait trapping
« on: Oct 24, 2015, 06:29 PM »
Anyone started yet? I got to get a new tank this season. Mine froze caused by a pump mishap. split the side right open. Once i get the new one it will be a short time before its full. I got a real good spot that was given permission to trap on a small veggie farm. Whats everyone else planning for this season?

Could you veterans give us some pointers on the fine art of trapping bait?

Started trapping a couple weeks ago. Mostly getting fatheads in the 2-3" range and rainbows 2 1/2-4" Should be good for early season walleye!

Usually get a couple dozen every day. Not like early season when the traps were friggin full after a 12 hour soak.

I don't think I'm going to trap this year. Just put the house on the market recently and don't feel like having to move everything.

get a minnow trap some dry dog food I paint my traps black  it makes them harder to spot I find they work best if they are not totally submerged and try to hide them best you can to discourage shoppers and shoplifters

I second Fredjiggy...who's got some pointers? I have not had luck with this in the past. Granted, I haven't put in much time with it. I think my mistake has been starting too late in the season when who knows where the heck the bait is.

I have tried bread, corn flakes, and cat food. Never tried chicken livers or anything (though I guess cat food has chicken livers in it?)

^+1

I trap in the reclaim ponds at work. Spring is a bumper crop. At one point I had 3 big marine coolers jammed full. Fall is a little slower but the bait is bigger.

In my experience, even 10 feet can make a difference. One of my honey holes is a point near and inside turn. Open water side of the point is usually a bust. Throw the trap 15' towards the inside turn and the trap can be jam packed in a 12 hour soak. Dunno why. Dog food and bread are my best producers.

Keep trying different spots.
