Homemade $3 JawJacker. WITH RESULTS!!!
« on: Mar 10, 2015, 03:16 PM »
I've been watching a ton of videos of the JawJacker and I really wanted one but did not want to spend the money. I figured I'd try to make my own.  I picked up a $2.50 rod holder at Walmart, cut it down to size and inserted it into a 2x4.  I then cut about 1/2" off a mousetrap, cut a groove in the trigger plate and attached to the other end of the 2x4.  Lastly, I put a split ring on the tip top of my rod.  To set it, the ring goes through the trigger bar of the mouse trap.  The line then goes through the groove in the trigger plate.  As soon as there is tension on the line, the trap goes off and the tension of the rod sets the hook.

I went out to Sluice pond today with nateice to test "The Slapper" v1.0.  I set the first one in a hole with a salmon egg about a foot below the ice.  As i was drilling my second hole we both heard SNAP! I turned and saw the rod bouncing in the holder, ran over and pulled a beautiful rainbow through the ice on the rod.  It was awesome to say the least.  We ended up with two rainbows caught in about 2 hours on the Slapper.  Then Nate got another beautiful rainbow on a jig right under his camera.  It was an awesome day of fishing.  We'll be testing these rigs with some pickerel later in the week.  Stay tuned for more results.

Nice work Rob!
Even though I was there as a witness, I still can't believe how effective it was. Not 3 minutes under the ice it popped, and the rod was bent.  Can't wait to see how they work on the other species.

Not yet but I have come so close.  It's a little scary to set at first.

Nice handy work,  and nice bow!!  Patent your idea now.  I like the name "The Slapper".  Pretty cool how you can hear it also.
It is MY responsibility to make sure my children can enjoy fishing years from now. Make sure your kids can fish.  If you see something ILLEGAL Contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police Radio Room at 1-800-632-8075 at any hour of the day. They might show up if there is enough staff working.

The idea was not totally mine, I did see it done online.  The sound was surprising to me, it was really loud.

You could put a limiter of some sort on the business part of the trap, so as not to risk snapping a finger.  My understanding is that the arm only serves to add tension in setting the trigger mechanism.

I throw that out there as someone who recently moved into a foreclosure and has had to reset many a mousetrap :)

Yeah, I have a few ideas for tweaks.  Fishing for bass and picks, I think I can remove the spring from the trap and just use the tension of the rod pulling up to spring the trap.  It take a lot more tension from the bite to set it off that way, but shouldn't be a problem for warm water species.

Fished with nateice and his buddy today. We had a stellar day and Nate got a nice crappie on the slapped. His buddy had set up a gopro and caught the trigger going off and Nate fishing the fish. I'll post the vid when I get the link.

Ha!, This was funny… I just poked my head in the kitchen and asked the old lady if she knew where the mousetraps were. She instantly screamed  "You're ****ing me!!" and started to climb up on the chair…  I can't stop laughing….

I don't know what is… she's generally not a wuss, there's just something about mice.

My wife had the same reaction when I told her I had to stop at Lowes to get mouse traps.

On that note, here are two styles of those small wooden mouse traps, ones with small metal trigger plates and ones with large yellow plastic plates. For these traps, you need the large plastic triggers.  In my area on the north shore I've checked walmart, Home Depot and lowes. Lowes was the only store that had them. $2 for a 4 pack.
