umbrella net
« on: Feb 28, 2015, 10:36 AM »
I really struggle finding bait in the spring.
I would like to try getting my own bait this year ..but
it looks like nets of any kind are prohibited.?
Or is a small umbrella net considered a trap?
 ???

An umbrella net is a net. a bait fish wholesalers license would allow you to run that net.

I have a spot that traps disappear at.  I tried Dipping them a few years back. Throw some bread over your net and u can dip them pretty good. I can get 3 or 4 doz. inless than A half hour that way.  Saves going back for a trap to. I use my 4 foot smelt net.  You won't get many big bait dipping them. I don't anyways there to fast . Get your wholesale lic. And go for it. @)

From the maine laws and definitions

Illegal Implements, Use of:
Except as otherwise provided, it is unlawful to possess any grapnel, trawl, weir, seine, gill net, trap, set line or drop net on or adjacent to any of the inland waters of this State.
Except as otherwise provided, it is unlawful to fish with a grapnel, spear, spear gun, trawl, weir, gaff, seine, gill net, trap, or set lines. (12656)

A bait fish trap with cat food works very good. Just throw some dry cat food in the trap, and you will get plenty of good fish. Not sure what other bait works good, but I can recommend the cat food.

This is an interesting topic.. I have a nice throw net I use in southern states, always wanted to use it up here..
didn't know all I needed was the wholesalers lic..that's pretty sweet.. then you can sell bait as well..
good information
and a tax write off..
