First off, have you considered putting a camera down to aid retrieval ?

If I lost my 12 YO Garmin, the replacement would be another Garmin.

I used to have an etrex venture(similar to the etrex 20 I believe) and loved it. It died and,I replaced it with garmin gpsmap 78s. It is supposed to be waterproof and float, though I haven't tested it yet. I also decided on that one because it is compatible with their lakevu hd software, which gives fairly accurate lake contours for most every lake
