early morning vs night bite
« on: Jan 20, 2015, 08:13 PM »
Which one do you feel is more productive?  I know it all depends on the fish but from past outings which have given you the most success.

I prefer evenings because it fits my schedule better as I work long hours.

The night bite seems more productive than the early morning bite for me.

Very early Pre Dawn, before the crowd shows up basically in the same place and where the first ice flurry was works nearly all season. Mid-Winter, midday is fairly consistant, DEEP.

Even though I prefer to fish in the afternoon, the best bite for me is in the morning  :P

I would say production is 50/50 for me morning/night. I prefer fishing afternoon until dark because it fits my schedule & I hate waking up in the early a.m. On a couple bodies of water I do catch a lot of fish 10:00am - 1:00pm. I also notice that catching times seem to switch up a bit as the season progresses.

Most of my experience is soft water, and mornings have never been nearly as productive as evening ~1 hr pre-sunset usually is. Never figured daylight hours would matter as much or more for icefishing.

I have found mornings to be more productive for me when fishing lakes and ponds and evenings when fishing river systems.

What kind of fish are you targeting? I have never fished beyond dusk. would love to try but hate being the only person on the ice. I feel better even if the only other person is 200 yards away

Most success for the lakes we're on, has come early morning thru noon. Not always, but a good 90% of the time.   :icefish:

It's a toss up this year early I've iced keeper crappie and gills then suffered though the day till late afternoon bite. I'd say this year the afternoon has produced bigger slabs. This early late bite makes a LONG DAY but ice season is here now so we do it as much as possible.

Both but I think when I'm set up by 4 am the morning bite lasts a bit longer than the evening bite

depends on where and what. one lake, the bite is only good from 10:30 to noon and only crappie bite in winter even tho it holds monster gills. can't buy a gill in the winter on that lake. then in summer it reverses.

other lakes i like are best after noon near sunset, like last call in a bar. then the night fishing is good for crappie and gills and perch on one lake and only crappie.

if you target gills, they are sunfish for a reason. hungry ones will any time, but way more careful about biting.

i like to set up an area with a lantern to try to hold interest to the fish while its transitioning over to night. you can go scouting in deep water too, but hose are on the move fish, so best to either wait or only work a few holes.

I like the night bite just because I hate getting out of bed in the morning. But wish I liked the morning bite as I hear it is good. ;D

Where I usually jig for perch, the very early morning bite produces the biggest/most fish.  The afternoon bite really picks up, for sure, but the fish are smaller ones that seem to move in mid-morning and bite slowly through through the day.

Tight lines,
Bob

I would have to say that early morning is more productive for me during ice season.  Evenings are more productive in open water season.

Mornings for me. Wish it was the other way around but in my experience always the morning. Have had good luck in evening too, but like another poster said, it is short lived. They shut off fast
