Messing with cusk lines
« on: Jan 19, 2015, 02:34 PM »
Well I set cusk lines yesterday. Went and checked them today. Someone messed with all but one. They put them in the water and stole one of my weights.

I'm new to setting cusk lines. I set them off the beaten path. Is there anything special you are supposed to do or is it just punks?

That's odd ??? I have never had that happen to me. Not much you can do to prevent it since the traps are to be left unattended

That's messed up for sure.
I've never heard of anyone messing with them before. Some have been run over by snow machines, but that's expected. It is dark...
But that's straight up vandalism. Disrespectful. Dang punks....

Never once had cusk lines messed with except once on Newfie and it was a warden checking that I was a ounce or better weight and 6" or less from it with me hook. Found out it was them when I saw them the next day. Everything looked fine I could just tell someone touched it. It was just protocol I guess. Everything checked out.

Mine get run over a lot. I always put them out considering the potential loss or damage. Now I just make them out of branches/sticks.

Never had that happen to me. Usually when I set them I'm there until sunset and then back early in the AM, so there isn't much of an opportunity for someone else to get to them. No idea why someone would mess with them... other than to steal them or yank a fish you caught. But then again, bored youth have found stupider things to do.

I had some one cut three of mine just the weights and cut the others on the stick above water line last year during the derby.I notice the tracks in the snow just after the first one was found. The set was out only 8 hrs on Winni.
There must be a twelve step program for this

Ya I'm ok with snow machines or vehicles running them over. That's life but Ya. They were def messed with. There was one cut at the hook so I'm guessing there was a fish on there.

That's horrible man, must be some punk kids that don't know better.  I can't picture any grown man or real fisherman (irregardless of age) doing such a thing.

I had a coyote eat one of the guys I was with up at winni... Chew marks all over the trap,  pulled it and ran about 25 yards... No bait or hook left either...

Just a real dick move for someone to mess with your traps!

you can always set a dummy trap now set to explode if they pull up the line. That'll stop them.

Kidding lol but that sucks dude.

Ya I'm thinking young kids to. Because respectable sportsman won't mess with other peoples stuff. I reset them and I'm gonna check them today. See if there messed with.

If you find it keeps happening, might be worth a stakeout. Set up jigging a ways away and keep an eye on them. Or, if it's a very regular occurrence, could be worth a mention to F&G. For some reason those guys enjoy waiting patiently in the shadows, haha. Although, I doubt it'd be worth their time.

Last year mine and my buddy Dave's were messed with. For a few days in a row we had no catches, missing bait, missing hooks....etc. As a test I changed my cusk devices out to 5 gallon bucket lids instead it wood and then coverd them with snow. Guess what I had cusk and Dave who was parallel to me didn't, for 3 days. There are some very unsportsman like people out there nowadays.

Least you could do is inform F&G. It might not be worth their time unless it happens to you more often or possibly if other people in the area have it happen and also call.

Makes me think of lobstermen, and the crazy stuff they would do to boobytrap their traps.

I've met thugs like that with a blatant disregard for both the sport and the people who practice it.
