Think they're called triploids, they have some weird chromosomes causing crazy growth.

Thanks for posting this Mr E.

Oddly enough, no mention of this catch, locally.       :cookoo:

Think they're called triploids, they have some weird chromosomes causing crazy growth.

It is a wild/natural/unclipped adipose rainbow.

Most of the planters/stockers  are Triploid Troutlodge Kamloop and spring planted fingerlings to 6" are 11" to 14" by ice season.

The second year escapees will bend yer pole, ha.

The record Kamloop, taken from Lake Pend Oreille (pond o ray), was back in 1947.   (copied below)

Kamloops    37 lb.    —    —    Pend Oreille Lake    Wes Hamlet    —    —    —    1947

But the fish on this post was in the Clearwater below Dworshak dam, looking at the picture I'd venture he was pretty close to the boat restriction zone, at the second bridge.

Gator, are there Kam's there? I thought they were only steelhead and kings (the odd silver) in the Clearwater? Maybe came down from Dworshak? They classified it a steelhead just based on the release rule, I'm pretty sure there is no fin restrictions on land locks, i'll get the book in a second though.

No problem.  Wish they got that big around here.  I might have to trout fish if they did.

The Kams were brought in from Canada over 70 years back and released in the lake here.

I could be mistaken from reading about the monster in the Clearwater.

I'll correct my post before your very eyes, ha.......

If they could - they wouldn't get as big. All they do is eat whereas non triploids go through the spawning rigors. That's what I've read anyway.

We get fish like that in Idaho all the time....not!

They plant triploid kamloops in Dworshak (see IDFG website under fish stocking). I'm guessing it is one of those, and it feasted on kokanee fry before getting flushed downstream. I doubt it could get that fat living in a river its whole life.

I'm wondering if he had to release it because all rainbows over 20" are considered steelhead, and it has an adipose fin.

Nice catch! The water must have a over abundance of steroids diluted in it?

Icerookie, good call I think the flush theory is a good one, and that because he was in the river it would have had to be considered a steelhead obviously over 20" lol.

I thought something was up, steelhead up the Snake and Clearwater generally look a whole lot different then the Kams from the lake, ocean run look like a mirror generally.

Oops, I overlooked your question, F_L.

I thought Kams were weren't disbursed as widely as naturals and Triploids.      ???

If only we had one scale.

And true, Icerookie, the flush is logical.

Might look nice weight wise, but seriously, that thing is butt ugly. It has nothing to do with the lines of a "normal" rainbow.

Once I figure out how to photoshop my ugly mug onto that guy's face, I'll be entering it into the IS tourney  ;D

Incredible fish and even better that it was released.  I doubt I'll ever fish that place in my lifetime but it's great that the fish will get an opportunity to spawn again and maybe another lucky fisherman will have a shot to catch it in the future.

This is what they call the world record for rainbow trout now.
It is an escaped triploid farm fish caught on Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan by a couple of brothers a few years back.

They also have the WR burbot caught in the same lake a year or so after the trout.

Kind of stinks that it's not eligible for the state record, since he didn't have two witnesses.

"But Warren later learned that an angler needs two witnesses to a catch to qualify for a record, and he only had one."

Would have needed a certified scale too, something like a deli shop or IDFG office and then to an actual IDFG office.  A lot of record fish get caught out here but are closed to harvest now and will not be over taken for a long time.  We just opened Coho harvest again this 2014-2015 salmon season and the first one caught was the new state record because they haven't been eligible for harvest for over a decade.  White sturgeon and bull trout are examples that can't be broken but I bet the guys on the Snake have caught new records, and guys on the Clark Fork or in Lake Pend Oreille have gotten close to bull records.  We don't have huge burbot but their harvest is closed statewide too.
