Just pour 1/2 a bottle of 100 proof bourbon in the hole, it's 50% alcohol. It should work!  ;D

An old timer I used to go with would drill a couple inch deep hole about a foot away from the main one. Chisel a small trench between the two. Put a couple charcoal bricks in a coffee can and light.  Cheap, simple, and not bad for water. ( worked for warming up lunch too)

And for a serious answer, ahem ;-), as I drill my holes, I make sure I don't do the big pull out that washes everything away. I pull out slowly so all the shavings stay. I then build them up around the hole and cover it with the clean out slush and then push my tip up into it before it freezes with the flag on the side of the post that's into the wind. The ice walls keep the wind out pretty well. Wow, parts of that sounds dirty. Lol

Sooo... maybe just about anything goes?!?  I would highly recommend a 12 volt mixer, just leave it in the hole on high, keeps the hole from freez'n over, puts O2 in the water for healthier fish, (you could throw in a box cake mix and have cake!  ::)), That could also double as a way to feed the fish in your favorite honey hole, I really liked the Egg Beater idea, (just say'n)!   :o

Ok, guess i'll settle down and maybe give you an idea that doesn't include additives: Use the ice shavings from the drilling of the hole, pile them up a little to keep the wind off the hole, and for your tip ups, use a couple of hand towels covering all but the flag and release.  doesn't stop it, but it does slow down how fast the ice will form!  Ice/snow are good insulators! ;)

I have one more idea windshield washer fluid slushes up but wont freeze. But to be honest I made some hole covers out of a old log skidder intertube works great and get a lot of them out of just one.

Egg beaters are the most eco friendly way to go. Just go to one side of the tip up and beat the water like it was an egg. Your hole will never freeze over.

If you do all your ice fishing in July it's not likely you'll have a problem with holes in the ice freezing. The biggest concern may be the six inch hole in the bottom of your boat could make you have wet feet ...

I take blue foam insulation, glue old paneling on both sides.  Cut circles the size of 5 gal bucket bottom so they stack inside the bucket.  Cut slots for down rod.  push a little snow around them when on the hole.
Also cut soft black rubber mud flaps for when its windy.
