Trick to keep hole from freezing over
« on: Jan 15, 2015, 08:13 PM »
An Oldtimer told me he puts a little vegetable oil in the hole to keep it from freezing over. Any one hear of this? This can't be good for the environment is my first thought but what do I know? Does any body have an opinion?

Why not just use antifreeze and spray some wd-40 on your lure while your at it!

The best thing to do is buy those hole covers they make or make your own

PROBABLY WOULD KEEP IT FROM FREEZING BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR LURE AND LINE IN THAT.WHAT A MESS IT COULD TURN OUT TO BE. JUST SKIM IT . IF USING TIP UPS THE OIL WOULD BE ALL OVER THEM ALSO.

OK..The consensus is "don't put anything in the water that shouldn't be there". All kinds of gadgets and gizmo's to keep the hole from freezing..

If the cold air is restricted, refreeze is slowed, extending the time between skimming/reopening.

One way is sleeping bag mat material, Wally World, light blue, less than ten bucks and it makes a dozen or more.

Charcoal in a tin can helps and allows changing out terminal tackle when the line melts ~ know the hazard.

Copper coils that sputter warm water works too, a great distraction from slow bite times while tending the apparatus.       ;)2

I was told battery acid works well...just drain the cells amd discard lead battery to to bottom of lake. Makes an interesting mark on sonar.

P.S. Don't do that!

I use old pizza boxes filled with solid foam pads with a hole cut so the tip pokes through...

No - Not even close - I just run a bait check and knock out the skim ice.  Sometimes more often than others - it's a necessary evil - it's not like we're flats fishing in the Bahamas...

Wouldn't it just freeze up everywhere the oil is not? So you need to cover the hole with oil? Good luck explaining that to the DNR officer!

Best way to keep your holes from freezing is to catch fish.  ;D

Egg beaters are the most eco friendly way to go. Just go to one side of the tip up and beat the water like it was an egg. Your hole will never freeze over.

What color do you paint them if you fish at night?

Or you could build one of these....

A heated tipup box. Couple of lumps of charcoal in the can......keeps everything cozy ;D

Cost me about $12 to build.

Don't think I invented it. I stole the idea and made my own from stuff I had around and a 2x2 piece of 1/4" luan.

Can't remember where I saw the first one.

I made hole covers from "puzzle mats" (used as protective floor covering for exercise rooms) that I bought on Amazon.  $12 for 12 of them.

I cut them into 12" circles (although you could go smaller so they fit in a bucket), cut a hole in the center, and put a slot going from the center to the outer edge.

I sometimes use Mikes shrimp oil on my jigs. a couple drops in the hole helps to keep it open.

Why make it complicated. Just cover the hole with snow. It will insulate the hole and keep it from freezing. Yes you may have to scoop the slush out when you get a flag but it is free, you don't have to store it and it works well.

inter locking exercise foam mats cut as others say above have worked for me and if your jigging hole is freezing up use a buddy heater right in front of it careful not to melt your line.
