transducer float question
« on: Jan 10, 2015, 07:07 PM »
How necessary is the support line float?  Today was my first time fishing with a flasher and it seemed the float was taking up to much of my 6 inch hole.  If the tension is kept on the support line and not the transducer cable could the float be eliminated?

You can take the ice ducer off and use the small plastic bracket or get an 8inch anger. Haha. I use the ice ducer and a 8 inch hole and still not enough room with a giant circling bull gill.

Two holes :)

X2 I have a ten inch hole and still have that problem.  Either drill another or pull the transducer every fish. :icefish:

First off ditch the support cable from the bird it doesn't allow the transducer to hang straight and you lose signal. I use a 6" hole all the time I keep the ducer just above the bottom of the hole and to the side. This eliminates a lot of tangles I do pull the ducer for better fish though. If you can the float also you will be even happier. Make an arm for your ducer to hang from. @)

This doesn't put to much stress on the ducer cable?  I'm new to flashers so I'm just curious.  Great idea tho as I did notice my jig would disappear from the screen at times.

If you could pull off a padded arm for the ducer cable then it would work pretty good. Wouldnt recommend not having an arm for the cable...because it can freeze into the side of the ice.  The foat just takes up too much of the hole...So normally i would just drill holes side by side and have to turn the gain up a notch or 2.

I took the float/support cable off of mine after the first outing 3 years ago.  I've never had a problem with the transducer or with the line freezing to the edge of the hole without a support arm.  Buddy runs his lowrance flasher the same way with no problems.

Marcum uses an extendable arm that holds the transducer at the right depth.  Works pretty slick...the floats always looked like a hassle.

I hated that arm that marcum/show down uses.  I made a float.  Way better system

No float no arm. Let hang from the cable just long enough to get to the bottom of you hole. You probably have 8 inches of ice and 2 feet of cable.

If the ice ever gets as deep around here as the cable on my ICE 35 I think we are all in trouble.    :o

If your planning on fishing colder temperatures you will want an arm. Up here in the middle of the adks my cable will freeze in a few minutes..

I know with vexilar you can take off the float and use an eye bolt to secure its depth level

I use the eye bolt as well that is mounted on my bucket. The rubber stopper allows the cable to hang at a constant depth. As far as the freezing goes, everything freezes if it is cold enough. That's why somebody was smart enough to invent a skimmer!

You can go with/with out the float. That support arm that the cable hangs through on my fl-18 broke 12 years ago, I've been hanging the transducer over the edge of the hole ever since. I left the float on and leave it at the edge of the ice so the cable doesn't ever freeze to the ice. :) good luck
