Hey everyone, This is my first year on the ice. Iraq vet. I'm ready to take on ice fishing to the fullest and I'm looking forward to learning the sport! I'm in the middle of the state. Looking around the forum and everyone seems nice and knowledgable. Hope to see you on the ice!

Welcome and thank you for your service indeed! I hope you get into some good fishing this year in the middle of our state. I used to live in Des Moines. Where do you plan on going fishing? Are you in the metro area?

Thanks for the support Steve and from everyone else. It means a lot to me and all the vets that read this forum that people out there still do support us. It's been a crazy last couple years I wish you the best also!

Fishing spots...a buddy took me to a farm pond this summer and we got into some 16 inch crappies had a blast catching some nice fish so I think I'll continue with his pond.. I do want to check out lost lake, big creak, and I have a pond behind my office. I was on the fish this summer but now I have no clue.

Question.... I have a pond that is average to large for "iowa" it's all 8 ft no trees anywhere around it one bend and 4 islands I was thinking they are in the weeds but can't find them in the flats...I'm on the south ponds of Easter lake... Nice crappies but can't find them.... Next option was to use green lights. Has anyone used them before?

Try calling in some fish with a rattle bait or buck shot spoon .

I think I will try that I have a 1/8th ounce half blue and silver shiny spoon... I'll let you know how it works thanks

I hit Big Creek most of the time and some of the ponds around Ankeny, a few times a year like to make up to Clear Lake.

Be very careful to not get too close to the spillway, always warmer there.

Looking at top maps I see there is a deep spot right before the inlet that flows to lost lake is that any good?

(South side of damn if facing north)

Just across the river in Ne. As everyone else has said, thank you and your brothers and sisters who served our great land! The 100 holes maybe what you need to find the fish! You just wait the folks who partake in the sport are all more than willing to help out and some may become friends for the rest of your fishing days!
