Brown Trout don't seem to care for dead bait
However I have heard that Lake Trout will eat it.

Oh ya, we live bait is illegal here so we use dead bait for lakers and northern pike all the time. Also use pieces of dead bait on jigs and spoons.

Live minnows illegal in Alberta too. Dead minnows only.

take the time to put a little piece of cutbait on the hook along with the minnow, it should help make it seem like it was freshly killed.
